I'd like to offer my services to AO

I thought perhaps I could help out. I noticed to keep the site running, avatars are sig's have been removed. Well I think, avatars really are a must at a lot of forums. Signatures aren't.. far too big and a pain to moderate.

Now I have an idea to maybe get some avatars for people. Maybe we could create a members group for people who have either been here for a while or contributed a fair amount to AO.. where you can enable avatars.. no bigger than 100x100 and 25kb. To save AO the bandwidth trouble I will volunteer to host all of these avatars for these members right up to a 40 MB capacity.

I have some rules though.. you may not use this avatar off of AO. If you do and I find out so.. I will delete it from my FTP and you can suffer. Also.. using it on other sites will hurt my bandwidth and make it harder for everyone.

Moderation can be very easily done this way and AO saves bandwidth.. plus members will have something to make their posting more fun and stand out a bit more. Of course the content of avatars will be moderated and if admins want... perhaps disable avatars to anyone using one not linked from my FTP (or anyone else who volunteers to be an AO avatar host)

    what do you guys think?

Are you including yourself in this group?

Not to mention, off site hosting means it's much tougher to moderate, and on AO that's a no-no..

Then people will constantly (whine) and moan about how they want an av and blah blah blah. You'd have to make it everyone or noone.

Personally, I'd like a sig better than an avatar. I don't mind them regulating it by a certain height and width, but if it's hosted offsite then they shouldn't care about the size. Using a 400kb sig dosn't effect anyone's loading speed by that much(I'm on 56k and consider a 3-5kb download fast, don't talk to me about loading speeds) since text loads first, and dosn't effect AO's bandwith.

        1. the offsite hosting would be limited to my FTP thru moderation.

        2. i don't have to make all the av's ,, people can send me av's and I can host them

        3. i am not one to judge if i should be in the group or not, I'd leave that to a moderator.

I think this idea sucks. For those who don't know why, just think about it for a while.

Edit: One reservation I have: Say, for some reason, I decide to host my avatar on your FTP. Now, in the guaranteed event that I call you a bleeding idiot (don't worry, it'll happen, possibly for this idea), what keeps you from saying, "Oops! Sorry I can't find your avatar."?

I'd have to agree with wicked. How would this group be considered.Every AO member makes the AO forums happen.

I would agree I would like my sig back as well rather than a avatar.

              Pretty much sums it up.

And you(MadPSI) completley missed my point. I was talking about only letting certain people use them creating the whining.

the people allowed in would be according to rules and not just favoritism.

well you could have disagreed without sounding like a jack but I won't ask. I'm not going to just forget someones avatar because I'm lazy or don't like them. It's an honor system. Obviously I thought this through and decided i would be fair and honest or I would never volunteer to do it simply because of the crap that would hit the fan if I snubbed someone.

Frankly this site seems to function fairly well without avatars or (dare I say it) sigs... so why fix what isn't broken?

well I wasn't looking to fix anything, maybe just add a treat for people. but if hostility is the response to a friendly offer then I withdraw my offer for now.

Here is where it all goes wrong. Wouldn't leeway within the rules be considered a treat? Of course it would. Now, many established members had this, but we all saw where that led. Except for some, including you, for whom it was before their time. Perhaps if you were around to see the chaos that inequality brings you would better understand while your plan is dangerous.

I don't think anybody was going to accept it anyway.

And 40mb is a rather paltry offer, btw. And I don't think you understand just how much bandwith that would consume.
