I wouldn't swerve for any animal. I'd slow down without slamming the brakes but nothing that would compromise my family/others/me, the animal should have moved. If it didn't well then survival of the fittest.

if it happend on thursday it would have been a nightmare..

if it was hit while parked in the front yard with no car insurance, i'm pretty sure homeowner's insurance would cover it.

Maybe in some states, but in MI if it has an engine and is mobile under its own power (or should be as designed) then it is not covered under homeowners (my quads for instance need there own policy)
