    A/C and gasoline

alright, this has been bugging me for qiute a while now, so maybe you guys can clear it up.

does driving with your A/C on use up more gas than if you drove with it off, or does it make no difference? i always thought it didnt matter. but all my friends drive with the windows down and the A/C off. needless to say, it gets very annoying when ur stuck at red lights in 100 degree weather.

there was a study shown that when driving on the freeway, you putting down your windows actually uses more gas than the A/C does (aerodynamics).

of course if your driving around 30 or so, you would be better off using your windows.

but yes, your A/C does leach horsepower, so obviously it uses up gas.

Turning on the A/C engages the pump. The pump is turned by a belt. The engine turns the belt. The added friction puts more work on the engine, which now needs a little more gas to maintain RPM's.

Yeah, I saw a study just like the one that Jake references, so city driving take your pick, on the freeway use the A/C

Apparently you clean your car or don't live in it like I do.

hahaha, i suffer from the same predicament, if those windows open at faster than 40mph the driver behind me is going to think theres somebody in the back dumping out a bag of trash.

and coincidentally my air conditioning is broken, so sometimes i just have to take that chance that nothing important is flying out my windows

I was wondering this too. I drove on a full tank once with the air always on, then I did a full tank with the air always off. I came to the conclusion that my gas mileage sucks, but the AC didnt change it substantially.
