It's not so bad up here... my friends go hiking and such all the time up by the border and only one was eaten by a bear :) but it should be fun.

I just recently spent a day in Duluth for work. It seems like a great area. I am not a fan of Conoes, but Kayaking some of the water up that way looks like a lot of fun.

if you see a bear, growl at it, then curl up in the fetal position and make loud squeeling sounds. then come back here and tell us about it. i'v always wanted to know.

I have been canoeing in the BWCAW for a long time. Bears up there are more scared of you, then you are of them. Hang your food pack to make it difficult to get to. Nice and high. No, higher than that. No, higher than that. No, even higher. As for scaring off bears, get yerself a nice pot and big ol spoon, bang on that think and make a crazy racket, they will go running. I would highly suggest not spraying them with mace of any sort.

well im back and i had lots of fun but it did nothing but rain and blow the entire 6 days i was there except the 5th day
the 3rd day me and my conoe partner were going up a fast flowing river and he was steering and the river got us on the side and started pushing us around
but he tried to pull it around and it flipped so from then on most of our stuff was damp or wet cause the bags werent very good.....oh well so i caught a few pike and some small mouth
when we got back to minneanappolis we went to the MOA and went to the apple store!!!!
best part of the trip if you ask me

Welcome home!! Rain does kinda suck the fun out of an outdoor trip. Glad you survived and made it home safely. Hopefully next time it will be sunny!! :)

After spending a day in Duluth, I have a feeling it never gets sunny in MN:)

See, that is the reason I like kayaks over Conoes. A good touring Kayaking is much harder to flip.

Haha, those were camp sites that are set up throughout the place.

But each pack wieghed around 60-80 pounds I think. Food pack, gear pack, and 3 personal (tent, sleeping bags, etc) bags. There were 9 people and a guide IIRC. Fun stuff

The fire grates are how you tell it's a legal campsite. That and the nice fiberglass green stink pot. At least they aren't wood anymore, those rotted out. They were starting to replace them when I started going in the late 80s.
