Buy something cheap enough that you only need liability insurance as opposed to full coverage. Its way cheaper in the long run.
Personally if you want something fast and sporty pic up an early 90's Mustang 5.0. You may have seen a lot of them but theres a reason for it. A bone stock automatic will run 13's in the quarter and there are lots of aftermarket toys to get that down in the 9's. You can pick up a decent one for ~3,000 easy.
Oh, and if you want to go fast, whatever you go rear wheel drive...
