Why does next year's car model come out this year?

    It's only 200x... yet 200x+1s are out.

Anyone know the answer? I have some thoughts, but nothing concrete.

if it is the second half of 2005, what year of car would you prefer to buy... a 2005 or a 2006? like what magman said it is just a marketing scheme

I thought about that... but there must be a bit more to it than that. Like... not every company releases the next year's model at the same time. And the same company might release an '06 of one of their cars, but not another. I'm thinking that it might possibly have to do with what their stock looks like. If they have a bunch of '05s left, it would not be wise to release the '06 as soon. But, I'm just speculating.

I'd also like to know why some companys release products like the B2K5 mid-year. Oh wait, it hasn't even been released yet.

But it seems to be mostly marketing. Also, it helps when trying to sell the car. "Sure, it may have been made in 05, but it says 06!"
Hey, look at that! It's Santa!

I think it has something to do with pushing the previous year's stock out of the way. Like. "Okay, we got these 05s in, so we'll lower the price of the 04s a little bit to get them the hell out of here."

Someone explained this to me once, but I can't remember.

Well there is marketing behind it there is also other reasons.

This trend was popular when emission laws, CAFE standards, safety and enviromental laws required compliance by certain model years. So, once you were complain to 1998 regulations, you released it as a 1998 model year rather than just "improving" your 1997 - this helped seperate cars a bit more as things were added and changed.

Plausible, but it has been standard practice for a LONG time, even well before emissions.

                    64 1/2 Mustang anyone? 70 1/2 Camaro?

I once knew the answer, but time & mass quantities of alcohol have erased it from my memory.

While your formula works, would it not be better to add in relativity? I mean cars are both shiny AND have headlights, as well as several interior lights. There must be time travel involved.
