I started with a trip through Italy; arrived in Bari from Serbia (don't ask), then took the train up to Roma for the night. Did all that stuff, than up to Pisa, Milano, and eventually back to Florence.
Do you speak any spanish/italian/french? Those get you a lot further than English, even if you're really pigdin with it. Sometimes, people will "remember" they speak English once you try to communicate with them, instead of starting off in English.
