Well if you're going to try and weld it, make sure it's empty!! Actually it's not a good idea to try welding it yourself. Even after the gasoline is gone and evaporated, there will still be vapours coming from the metal itself (from what i've read) so the best bet is to take it to a pro or get a new tank.

Either that or JB weld the hole if its not too big.

Most people, when welding a part designed to contain gasoline will fill it with something first to assure there are no gas fumes in it - I highly recommend you do not, perhaps if you showed us this part we could tell you what it is. maybe its not expensive

I'd try using some of that liquid patching stuff, like JB Weld.

Obviously, dump all fuel first, then fill with water to vacate all residue. Instead of welding, try brazing the leak. It's a lot easier.

Keep at least 3/4 filled with water as you braze, with the leak site on top. Do NOT have the tankcap on, leave the tank open to vent the heat and fumes above the water level if possible.

Oxy acetelene welding using bronze rod, it's the best bet for welding a leaky gas tank. I've brased leaking fuel tanks before, as stated by army make sure it's full of water first or take it to a shop that specializes in rad and tank repairs.

DO NOT WELD A GAS TANK.

EVEN filled with water their is still pottential for an exploshion. Im a mehcanic by trade this practice is NOT SAFE.

Welding on tanks IS done but it is done with ALOT more precoution than can be done in a home garage.

So i repeat DO NOT WELD A GAS TANK

BUT if you remove the paint and drain ALL FUEL And liquide from the tank JB weld (that putty stuff) WILL work GREAT.

If it's a street cart, just go get a new plastic tank. It's better and safer anyway.
