Got my first road bike - fell on arse within 3 minutes.

Those danged clipless pedals... never used them before. I made a noob mistake, didn't shift correctly... chain fell off... and I fell over still attached to the pedals. I did the chicken dance while trying to detach myself unsuccessfully. Felt like a retard.

Apparantly it's an extremely common thing for noobs to fall over like that... realized that after the fact... and after I read some tips on how to get on and off the bike.

    Anyone have this happen?

I know. Now Sarah and I are going to have to follow you around in traffic when we go up there. Wonderful.

for the past 5 days we ride 10 miles at 6:30 in the morning. its so nice. no cars, just rising, nice and cool.

que, the key is to have them adjusted for YOU and to make sure a simple heal kick will get your foot out. I have never actaully had a problem getting my foot down in time. My question is how screwed up is your bike that you can change gears and have the chain jump off? I would take it back to the shop and have it looked at. Even on both high gears, that chain should not come off (it's just not wise to ride like that).

last road bike I had, it was kinda old... i was pedalling up hill, and the pedal snapped off. I did a full 360 over the handle bars. I have a nice shoulder scar from it.

Well... my feet come off easy when I do it right. However, I tried to pull out w/o twisting my heel = that doesn't work at all.

I'm not sure what the deal was with the chain. I don't think I did a full shift... then did it again twice... and I shouldn't have pushed so hard on the pedals while the chain was moving. I'll play with it until I figure out if there's something wrong with the bike or with me.

Can't say I've ever had that problem (being unable to get out of the clips/straps) before with either my road bike or my mountain bike. Though I have had a few really bad crashes because my chain's jumped off the gears or when doing something dumb and having my shoes come unclipped and planting a foot instead of making a stroke on the crank. Thankfully I've been wearing stuff on my back every time I've gone over the bars on asfault and don't have any big scars to show for it, unless you count thrashed packs.

hehehe, i ride my folks bike sometimes when i go see them, the footstraps are a bit small, so if im riding for a while my foot will get jammed inside the straps. then ill stop and realize i cant get my feet out.

hehehe (no real injuries yet though)
