    Which Airgun to buy?

Anyone have experience target shooting with airguns?

I'm pretty much sold on getting myself a Walther CP99, a Gamo cone trap, a canvas tarp for a back stop and setting up a range in my garage. I have 40' from back wall to garage door which means I can setup a good 10m range if I wanted to get really serious about training.

But I'm wondering if I should get the CP88 or the CP88 competition instead.

Would I notice a big difference between 360fps from the CP99 and 426fps from the CP88 competition?

I settled on the CP99 initially because I was flirting with joing the local indoor firearms range and the P99 caught my eye. The CP99 is IDENTICAL. Same weight, same action/trigger. Just quieter, I can shoot it at home, and I don't need a permit.

I had a CP88 and was VERY happy with it. The most realistic pellet gun I have ever owned by far!

Well, the CP99 is realistic enough for the local police to train with (They use the P99-QA).

when I was a kid, we used a cardboard box filled with newspaper as a backstop. Worked pretty well, allowed us to easily retrieve the BBs for reuse.

That's fine if you're shooting steel BBs. But steel BBs are a bad idea. Lead BBs and pellets are much safer (no/less richocet). And pellets aren't reuseable.

No worries, I'll have eye protection for myself and any observers.

I'm wondering if I'm best with the pellet trap mounted on a post (which I can move) and a canvas tarp as a backstop or if I should build a tressle that would support a 4'x8' low density panel and the pellet trap.

I think I like the looks of the Gamo cone trap the most. Any other recommendations? Anyone nknow of something similar but larger?

Nobody else have anything positive or negative about various pellet pistol choices?

While I've seen many 10m pistol matches and been around lots of Air Pistol shooters(some of the best in the world), I've never really looked into the equipment. In terms of pellet choice, In my rifle I usually shot R10s, 4.50mm heavy. Recently it seems that R10 quality has dropped, and I usually end up throwing out many pellets per tin due to them being slightly misshapen. However, I've tested many brands of pellets, and those that consistantly shot the best out of my rifle were the JSB Match Diabolos, green package(the pro pistol pellets). Those will probably be hard to find though...somewhere in my cellphone I have a number of some Romanian guy(I think) in Texas that supposedly sells them(dont know if he still does) if you want it. If your just starting out, buy some decent pistol pellets(not the cheap stuff) and practice alot. I'll stop before I go into some shooting training rant. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Sorry for bringing this one back from the dead...

                      Slarty-

While I do shoot competitive air rifle and smallbore rifle, I'm not exactly competing in the same type of target shooting you're looking at.

Here's the air rifle I shoot. The type of shooting I do is USAS/NRA 3-Position rifle.

And here's the smallbore rifle I shoot.

Sorry, I'm not up to speed on the Gamo rifles. What type of shooting are you looking at getting into? It looks like you're trying tp setup a range at your place, but are you looking at getting into any specific discipline? Sounds like you'd like to get into the field target and silhouetee shooting. If you browse around on Anschutz's site they do offer some target rifles for thos applications.

Interesting, I've only been out of the loop for the past few months and I've missed this. How does the action compare to the 9003? Stock seems similar to those used with the 2002's.

I'd be willing to bet they carried over the trigger group from the 9003 to the 8002. They always used the 5018 trigger on all the smallbore and air rifles and apparently with the 9003 they improved upon it or came out with a whole new one. Either way, they decided to shorten the lock time on the 2002 and call it a 8002.

But yes, I have a 2002, not an 8002. They just don't have pictures of the 2002 anymore.

It's about time they redid the 2002. Feinwerkbau has always been outselling them about 5 to 1.

                            Actually, thank you.

You're certainly in a different class than what I'm considering at the moment.

I'm just wondering if I'll bore quickly if I buy a replica handgun and if it might be worth the extra to get a more target shooting focused air pistol.

Or, maybe get the replica and use it to guage whether further investment in better equipment is worthwhile.

I've handled the Walther CP99 and must admit I'm smitten. I haven't been able to find any accuracy information on it though.
