I just finished getting my M2 and currently dont own my own bike YET. But i do ride my mthers bike every chance i get. Its not bad but a tad small for me its a 1997 Suzuki 650 Savage.

Currently im looking at a few differant bikes Suzuki 800 maruaders/Intruders, Kawasaki 500 Vulcans and the 800 Vulcan (god i love these bikes). And lastly the yamaha V-star 650.

800cc is as big as i can go for inshurance reasons but if i get an 800cc it has to be a tad older than say the 500cc to keep the upfront cost lower than that of the new 500 i looking at so as to counter the more expensive inshurance.

Anywho here the only pic i have of my mothers bike kinda crappy pic but it works.

OH AND IF I CAN GIVE ANY ADVICE DONT CHEAP OUT ON GEAR EVEN IF IT MEANS NOT GETTING A BIKE FOR AWHILE YOUR GEARS MORE IMPORTANT.

Dont have any pics of my bike yet, but I'm riding a brand new Harley 883 sportster. I just passed my class in the end of june, so im also a new rider. And Bear_Claw is right, don't skimp on a helmet and other protectives. Some gear is really expensive, like good helmets, but just suck it up and tell yourself you'll be glad you bought quality when you need it. But back to fun stuff, good luck on your class, they are really fun, and hope you get a bike soon, they are the coolest thing since forever.

The big is the street bike, whichI use everyday (750cc to be 1000 this winter)

The middle one is a little 72cc dirtbike that I bought to play in my friends backyard

And the little one is for parking lot racing with that same friend.

I"ve got a few toys. I need to get my hosting fixed first. I"ll be glad to show pictures.

              1983 GS550ES

And a coupple parts bikes ;-)

As for picking your first bike, I have a simple rule. Displacement IS NOT A GOOD INDICATOR. Every 600cc bike on the market makes more horsepower than all but one harley! If you live in an aera with highways. (think chicago) You need at LEAST 24 horsepower, and less than 80. I wanna see you riding next year, so you don't want so much power the bike can bite you. And you need enough horsepower to stay out of the way of semis. Beyond that, practice your butt off.

OH yeah, on other news. Cheap DOT helmets generally provide BETTER protection than the expensive noodlebuckets. There was a study done by motorcyclist two months ago that really opened my eyes.

Cheap helmets, so long as they are DOT, are GOOD IDEAS.

And as for riding gear, I wouldn't be typing today if it were not for my helmet, jacket, gloves, and steel toe boots.

Exactly what nerobro said is right, the softer foam in the DOT, allows your skull to deaccellerate over a longer distance, (and yes, millimeters matter here) and therefore allows less peak force to effect your brain.

Even so, the level of coverage to your head is important. for example, don't get a half beanie and expect it'll provide more protect that a full face Snell rated helmet. There are lots of good protective cheap helmets out there. Get one.

                  And nerobro, what? no pants?
