it is easier to lose control on dirt roads then it is on paved roads... which is why alot of off raoders deflate thier tires just a bit...

of course... but does that make it stupid or exceedingly dangerous to drive on a dirt road? no, you should just be more careful doing it. the same as with passing on the right. the point of my post.

those lines on road... they are there for a reason... the dotted ones means it is safe to pass in that area.. The yellow ones you should not cross..You are not going to drive on the other side of a guide (guard) rail just cause your vehicle is able to.. so basically stop coming up with stupid debates as to why you phiscially can and just follow the rules that are set down...
stay inside the lines...it is quite simple..(just like coloring in kindergarten).
edit* when you signed that form at the DMV for your license it said that you agree to obey the laws as set down by the state.. If you don't want to agree to the laws why bother getting a license?

...? youre talking about passing a moving car on the left. im talking about passing a stopped car (waiting to make a left turn) on the right side. and, as i said, if you are following the rules as they are set down, it is legal here to pass on the right. youre the one who called me "stupid" for it.

and in regards to your edit... are you seriously saying that you always follow the speed limit perfectly, and comply to every law there is in regards to driving?

I think one issue is if the left side is on road and the right goes off-road... significantly different amounts of traction and such. Under the right conditions/speed - could rollover, lose control, or whatever.

I'm not saying this was a danger in his situation...

congradualtions you just completley and totally confused me and most likeley yourself.
I have from the begining been reffering to going on the shoulder of the road (in the us on the RIGHT hand side, in order to pass a vehicle who is on your left hend side..). If a car pulls over (ie to the right side) and allowes you to pass then all is good. i have never heard of that being illegal.. <shrug>

I drive with the basic flow of traffic now as to not be a hinderance others. I have learned to guage how i should drive by how others are (if there are two semis neck in neck i am going to stay back, or turning on my turn signal and pumping my brakes alittle sooner then needed to pull into my drive way, which is on a higway with a 55 mph speed limit, in order to give those fast moving cars behind me a heads up... ect..). One very very bad accident on a state highway in 2001, my two tickets, my mothers near fatal accident 2 months ago,and seeing at least 3 nasty accidents each week within walking distance of my house has tought me this... Not only that but life is short enough and my kids are precious to me.. why chance it with accidents. Why risk my life and others by not being patient and passing in unsafe areas?

Cameo ... it's not as simple as in Kindergarten. Just like when you were a child, staying within the colored lines is a good *starting point* but in reality those lines are nothing but paint and are only a guide. Death rays will not come from the sky if you cross them (c:

What I'm talking about is becoming a better driver by thinking outside the box. Driving is not a child's game of coloring, it's life and death and you need to make split second decisions sometimes to prevent accidents.

Let me give you a good example. I was driving my cousin and her daughter to the airport after a visit and my Mother went for the trip too ... so I had 3 generations of drama queens in the car ready to pounce on any little thing I did. I was in the left lane on the highway and as it happens traffic came to a full stop for some reason or another. Now I always watch my mirrors and I saw a guy coming up behind me fast who wasn't paying attention, so I quickly went on the grass and up a bit to get out of his way ... to immediate howling protests of course. Well, luckily the guy woke up and jammed on his brakes, but he only missed the car in front of him by about 2 feet, which means he would have nailed me if I had stayed on the road.

I know my arguments are *not* stupid as you suggest, since they are part of advanced driving courses, such as the ones insurance companies hold for fleet truck drivers. Know how much space is around you at all times and go there if you need to to avoid an accident, regardless of the painted lines.

I think what's really bothering some people is this slow realization that the "law" these days is used less for actually keeping people safe, and more for collection revenue. For years I worked in local television and saw what happened during government meetings. In this state, Mass Highway will conduct a very scientific traffic study of a particular road, looking at all factors and recommending a speed limit for the road. One of the factors they look at is the average speed of drivers on the road since most people naturally drive at a safe speed for the situation (they take the lowest and highest 2% out and average the rest). Well, a lot of times the chief of police will come up with some bogus thing about complaints from neighbors or some such, and the selectmen or mayor will wink at them and use the excuse to lower the speed limit even more. At the end of it all you'll have Mass Highway recommending a speed limit of 35, but the speed limit will be dropped to 25 and of course this will be followed by increased "enforcement". It's all a joke, it really is.

It's still legal to pass on the right in Massachusetts. What's legal or not more often has to do with what particular piece of dirt is under your tires, then what's right or wrong.

I have many a time passed on the right hand side, even some places around my house have shoulder barriers bent to allow for such passing. Only when it says no riding on shoulder would I assume that you really shouldn't be doing it. But, sometimes coming off the Highway even then I do it. Getting stuck in a line of traffic for 5 minutes waiting for them to hit the light seems pretty annoying when a large patch of pavement allows you to safely go around them.

I don't consider this to be a highly unsafe act being that its sometimes better than the pavement I've just driven on and you are doing it at such a low speed.

I think defensive driving should happen at all times I have seriously avoided some accidents just by driving defensively... Which probably has also led me to some things that would be considered against the law doing it. But, a chance I'm seriously willing to take when it comes to not getting in an accident.

Do, I think you should fight the ticket...no, I would assume you'd just be wasting your time I got to sit in for a good day of traffic ticket fighting when I got a ticket for driving without insurance (which I had it was just all messed up for some reason, so I had proof that I had it so I fought the ticket and won.) Which put me through about 10 - 15 cases before mine of the same type of stories ...and to none of which the judge overturned ...

Sometimes you just get caught, which sucks...but, hey.. Somtimes its just very hard to avoid such things. I do think that sometimes you get shafted but, everyonce in awhile it also goes your way. I got caught as a teenager going 110 MPH in a 55 zone and he gave me a ticket for a dirty license plate. I could have been in some serious trouble that day but, the cop was nice. I'm sorry for your luck. But, pay it and hope next time it works out better.
