Think I found a Piece to an older ship cannon? PICS

Today while scoping out the beach I see this really peculiar thing, I check it out... Its a piece of metal? Wierd? With that hurricane that just came through must of brought it up... I do not know exactly what it is, but the inside is oh so smooth... Definitly made for something specific, judging by the shell content stuck to it its definitly old. Any one here know anything about this?

Also do you guys think its a good idea to try to use some kind of cash to remove all the debris off of it just reveling what is left of the metal? If so what should I use

By the way I found this off Jupiter Beach in West Palm/Jupiter Florida

::dodgy:: or ash tray. The reason I think its this, because there are many old battle ships that have crashed along the coast of florida, and this hurricane brought in alot of stuff

Ok.
You *think* it's a part from an old Cannon.
What makes you think that?
Some distinguishing mark?
I just want to see the thought process that went into this.

I love finding old stuff. A few years ago I found the old suspension to a horse and buggy in a park in Princeton. It was a type of leak suspension. However, I can no longer find it.

That looks like it could have been part of a cannon. Then again it looks like it could be from many other things. The wall seems to be fairly thick, although I am not sure it is thick enough for a cannon. Take it to a local historical society or museum and see what they can tell you. Cool find and good luck.
Hey, look at that! It's Santa!

Not any cannon part. The walls are not thick enough for that bore size.

If it came off a ship, I would bet it is a spar cap. Spar caps were iron caps at the ends of spars and masts, that helped prevent splitting of the wood.

Well the walls were about 1.5" Thick, and the inside was smooth, so I just assumed it could be a cannon breech, not ot mention you can see it came off somethin longer, because u can see break marks.

I don't believe its what you think it is

wouldn't thonk that piece is off of anything relatively old. Look at the lack of anything that has attached itself to the metal. Now go look at National geographic and look at the spreads on cannons and other pieces removed from war ships or even look at the wreckage of the Titanic. That piece you have there is no way near what that ship looks like and the cold at the bottom of the atlantic keeps ALOT of things preserved. Still an interesting piece.

On the back you can not see any metal, just shells and barnicles attacked to the metal? same with parts of the side

::edit:: my guess, is as it fell to its final resting point before the hurricane it was face down perfectly preserving the interiro but not the sides or back.

shouldn't you keep it in some salt water or some specail bath?

on those tv shows about old ships and stuff, they always put what they find into a special bath to preserve it. something about the air hurts it.

Those "battleships" as you call them are mainly Spanish men o'war or galleons which employed muzzle loading cannons so unless the back of the cannon actually snapped off then that isn't a portion of any cannon.
