gas to diesel conversion, is it smog exempt?

hi all, i am wondering how this would work. If i replaced a gas engine with a diesel would i have to smog it still? I know if i bought a truck with a diesel in it already i wouldnt have to. Would i be allowed to such a thing by the powers that be ? Im in California by the way.
    thanks for any info

For CA I do not know. For PA you would have a hard time gettng it inspected. For the PA inspection you must have all the emission controls that came on the car from the factory. The thing is, most of them would not work on a deisel anyway.

Hmmm, that must be after a certian year....because had a gas truck..made it a diesel...no more emission requirements..got it inspected for like 4 years before the body just couldnt pass.

What year truck. In PA before I think it's 1990 no truck (deisel or gas) required emissions.
