i have just bought a new cell phone (sanyo mm4700). and i was wondering if any of you guys use a usb cable to sync/connect to your laptop or desktop. but more importantly i would like to know what i would be able to do if i were to use that usb cable.

I can't find that model phone. What provider is it?

I very well might have a cable for it from my old Sanyo phone that I was going to toss on ebay here shortly. If it will work on your phone, I'll just sell it to you.

Here is the cable and software

The cable I have would work also, except it doesn't charge the phone (which is a great feature) and I don't have any software.

thesupplynet.com has the cheapest charging cables:

The cheapest non charging (OEM Cables!) are at http://www.3gcables.com/

I've heard of some issues with the carging cables, and since Sprint just replaced my Samsung phone with a Sanyo i need a new one (one just like the one Muzik has.... )

As for software, no software is needed to connect the phone as a Modem (BUT THAT IS A SPRINT PCS TOS NO-NO!) and BitPim is a fairly good open source app for baking up and transfering phone book info and other data.

so then software is needed to transfer data? i would mainly use it to transfer info to the calendar, but transfering mp3's and images would be nice too.

Really? I was at a sprint store yesterday asking about that. When I asked him about using my phone as a modem he didn't have any problems with it. Granted he did try to sell me on vision service so I could get more bandwith...

Well, Doing it for internet conenctivity is against TOS unless you have a Vision plan with per MB charges.

The standard Vision plan is for use on the device only, not on a PC via a connection cable.

Hrm, I'll definately have to check into it some more. Either things have changed, the guy was totally wrong in what he told me, or we weren't talking about the same thing.

Things changed back just after the "Vision" service came out. What has it been, 2 years? At that time I renewed my plan and am grandfathered in. So for me to do it is not in violation (I have confirmed this) but as soon as I would change my plan I would not be allowed.

This is the reason you can not buy the cables from Sprint or Samsung or Sanyo any more.

Supplynet has great prices, but rape you on shipping. So if you do order from them, order more than just the cable.

Aslo, to use the phone. Plug it in to the machine, wait for it to detect the phone and install the drivers. Create a new dial-up connection, select the phone as the modem and enter #777 for the phone number.

Bitpim is a great little free utility, but it does not work with all phones. It probably will work with all the Snyo's but I do not know this for sure. It's also not a pretty interface, so unless you have some geek in you, you might have a hard time working with it.

i use Bitpim, i have an lg vx8000 and can change my mp3's (ringtones) and photos and everything :-D

you can even put ringtones on your phone at a full 320kbps if you want instead of 16-56kbps

are you able to access the internet from your phone? and can your phone accept realtones? from what im gathering it is capable of both but just wanting to make sure.
