I'm pretty sure discrete is a whole number while continous is not

Quantitative refers to something with an actual number value, such as income or age. Quantitave variables can be manipulated mathematically, with averages, means, medians, etc.. Qualitative variables are those which must be grouped into categories. It includes demographics stuff like ethnicity or occupation, and opinion-poll questions like "Do you support proposition 147?"
I think discrete versus continuous is mainly a grapghing consideration. Discrete variables have fixed possible values within a range, all whole numbers, for example. It is misleading to show these on a line graph, since there is really nothing between the plotted points. Continuous variables can have any value within the range, including 32.5, 3.14, etc..
