was watching TV the other day and found a show on lowriders and how to do some "ghetto work" on your car. To make an uber-smple lowrider there are two ways..... both of which cost maybe $20. One way is to get like 15 people to sit on one corner of the car, when the spring depresses to a good point tie a chain around it to keep it down. The other way is to torch the underside of your car......... most of the metal is soft and will melt well with a good sized blowtorch. Carefully melting the springs seems to work well enough, but if you go too far the ride is rather bumpy..... this is a good thing to do on a project car

First off, they weren't melting the springs. They heat them up enough so that they lose their temper, and become "softer." Thus sitting lower. This would be pretty difficult to do evenly all around, and is going to change the ride pretty drastically. Odds are you wont change the temper evenly on any given spring, the ends are likely to hold their temper better (due to heat soak), which will leave some parts of the spring softer than others. This means that the softer areas are going to flex more than the other parts, and I would imagine you'd see accelerated metal fatigue and eventually spring failure.
Tying the chains around the springs doesnt strike me as a horribly good idea either. The chains are going to be under alot of stress constantly, plus whenever the springs compress and then decompress (think pothole), you are going to be putting even more stress on the chains... I cant see them lasting too long. And I dont want to be standing next to the car when they snap.
And I cant see either of these things being a "good idea for a project car." But thats just me. -
We torched the springs on an old lowrider chevy pickup in my highschool shop class and it's pretty lame... And the chain idea would probably work alright, but would make it a stiffer ride for sure. I doubt it would be all that impressive if a chain broke, it would just snap and the car would pop up a few inches to it's normal ride height...
In general I think lowriders are pretty ghettocraptastic anyhow. Lifted stuff is where it's at!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
Wrap chains around your suspension to make your car a lowrider? Anneal the springs so they provide less resistance to the load of the car?
Anyone who tries these on anything besides some old junker they plan on throwing away is in for a serious world of hurt. What happens when that chain comes off as your driving? or the springs decide to break instead of bend?
Why on earth would you ever attempt to lower a car anyways, if your roads are anything like the ones around here you couldn't drive five miles without losing your muffler.Comment
