When I was a kid I use to watch Get Smart all the time.

Max: Ninety-nine, this ship is a freighter, right?

        99: Right, Max.

Max: And freighters run on fuel oil, right?

        99: Right again, Max.

Max: And wooden masts belong on sailboats, correct?

        99: Exactly.

Max: And this is a wooden mast.

        99: Go on , Max.

        Max: Ninety-nine. . . .

        99: Yes?

Max: I forgot where I started.

I liked the car, Sunbeam Tiger worth a good chunk of change nowadays if you can find a straight one.

Damn right, but I guess you could convert an Alpine.

Don Adams was one hell of funny guy.... I was always waiting for Inspector Gadget to say "Would you beleive..."
Shaun Nelson --- old, fat, slow.... did I mention lazy? I ate all the pies

That is what I mean by straight, Sunbeam Alpines are hard enough to find straight, normally they look ok but often they have fibreglass wings or worse wrong parts so to convert an Alpine to a Tiger wouldn't be straight.

Something that is sort of sticking in my mind is that in the link above saying about what he did and when. Did he not do a series of ads for a telephone company sort of based on the Get Smart personna with people being tied to rockets and other stuff. I think it was a sort of reverse charge deal or phone card ad?

I thought you meant Straight, as in uncrashed

Hmm, I'm of the opinon, given that the body shells of the Alipine and the Tiger are the same, it wouldn't require bodging, or fiberglass, or hiding things to convert it to Tiger specs. Of course, it wouldn't be a Tiger, but it would be the exact same thing. (well if converted right, of course, you can't just drop in a V8.)

However, I'm in the "driving" and "enjoying" camp of classic cars, and not on the "numbers matching collecter" side.

I do have an odd urge to tape my cell phoen to an shoe, and answer calls like that today...

I like to drive classics too but when you have a car that appears to be correct but instead of the steel wings you have fibreglass ones it isn't the same. If I want fibreglass then I would look at Lotus's.
The use of fibreglass wings is very common since you can't easily find the steel ones the internal parts and running gear are simplish since it is all part of the Rootes group which in turn was Chrysler? Though the 1970's Chryslers we got here were crap often rebadged as Hillman.
I agree it can get taken too far with Concours appearance and that is a step too far IMHO but some like it. I would rather repair what is there or even rechrome parts that are too difficult to get. But a wing is a really important part and painting fibreglass has it's own set of problems. A good few years ago I got the idea to find a regular Alpine circa 1967...looked and found a few but funds were too tight at that time so waited until I had the money this now being the winter now as so drop tops sell for a lot less in the winter months but the prices had risen from "needing paint to finish" examples to "needs total restoration" for the same money as the summer so needless to say I left it. Crazy thing is there is an Alpine not 20 miles from me that a guy is using as a storage shed and still he wants stupid money for it...though I do happen to know who rebuilt the engine so that part is sound but still out of my price range for a car that would be for fun and not a daily driver.
