I'm looking to learn, so I am going to pick up some used equipment rather than rent. I went on a lesson last year and enjoyed it.. What should I look for in a board? I'm pretty big -- 6'2'', 220lbs with big feet (12!) so it seems like i may need a 'fat' board. Aside from that, I have no clue what to look for.... Suggestions welcome (and keep it on the 'cheap')

Big things i would look into is where you will be boarding.. I wouldn't use the same board in the nice powder of the rockies as i would on the "hills" they consider moutains out here.. The snow is alot heavier.."You are wonderful, whitty, and wise, but you spend to much time reading this sort of TRASH." -
look into a burton floater. Great starter board, its a wide board, but it will do what you need. Set it up with some burton freestyles, or some ride bindings (straps, screw clicks) and go for it. Go to a reputable store, and some where that doesnt treat you like a deuche. If they treat you right, they will get you set up.
Second off, invest in some arse pads, your butt will be in pain rob.
You can always rent, but that is no fun, as rentals suck, the edges are all worn, and they are beat to hell.

Everyone says I'll be sore as hell but after the lesson I took, I was fine -- even after the falls.. Maybe its from playing so much ice hockey? My legs are in pretty good shape... After spending almost $200 between rental/lessons/etc, I figure it would be cost-beneficial to get my own stuff, albiet maybe some inexpensive beginner stuff.... That way, if I am not too fond of it, I am not in the hole by too much. Will a reputable store sell used equipment, as well? I already have stuff like gloves, pants, jacket, hat, goggles, etc -- which I bought before I went the first time I went.. Basically just looking at a board/bindings and boots

Most reputable stores will have a used board selection, i know Fairmans in westchester does (not that that helps you or any thing) but seeing as you are in the great NE and have good ski areas (okemo, killington etc) thee should be a reputable store, with some used stock who will help you get setup.

A buddy of mine is selling me a year old Burton "Bullet" 162 w/ Burton Freestyle bindings for $100.. It was an old backup board that has only seen 20 rides on it.. he's been riding for 12 years and says this will be perfect for what I'm looking for... its good size for my height/weight/feet..
sounds like a score, for me.

From your hieght and weight the 162 sounds a little short (the rule I was taught by friends and stores Blades and underground was that it should be between your chin and nose) but should not be too much of an hinderance. I'd worry more about the condition of the board. Avoid deep scratches, and anything that looks wrong (sure you can ptek some of that stuff but in the end it may not be worth it. Heck the only reason why I kept my first board and fixed it is cuz it has some old school charm to it ( non standard bindings)Originally posted by rkjunior303A buddy of mine is selling me a year old Burton "Bullet" 162 w/ Burton Freestyle bindings for $100.. If you are around boston there is always the boston snowsports expo
I tend to go visit there to get some great deals on unused equipment from last year.Comment

I'm actually probably closer to 6'1'' and I hover between 200-215 normally. I'm on a push right now to get back to 195. I think this board should be ok.. Eli seems to know what he's talking about and if it doesn't ride well, hell, for $100 I should be able to sell it for what I paid for it. The board is in great condition. he just had it tuned up and the bindings, while 2000, are in good shape.

That rule is crap...you go by your wieght and height also your shoe size can have some say also at least for your bindings casue you could get toe drag....but if so you can always get risers or your stance or board may be wide enough so you dont need to worry about it.Originally posted by sbpyroFrom your hieght and weight the 162 sounds a little short (the rule I was taught by friends and stores Blades and underground was that it should be between your chin and nose) but should not be too much of an hinderance.
