    Learn YOUR History !

This just burns me up. If you think school is "too hard", then you too will get a swell job like, Airport Screener.

There is NO excuse for this, NONE. This is because people are too damn lazy to learn what and why they are here today. I have met Joe Foss, he is one of the finest men to have served America, a genuine legend of OUR time. Selfless service, bravery that goes beyond any Hollywood BS "Rambo" movie, true patriotism, a Marines Marine.

Read this, and get angry as hell at YOUR school system that refuses to have you learn about men like General Foss and the history he created. YOUR schools and YOUR parents, who refuse to force the schools to change, should be ashamed for teaching "feel good" crap that does nothing to further YOUR education.

Indeed, I would have to agree with Army. This situation is downright rediculous. I have the utmost repsect for veterans and the military; my grandfather is a veteran of Korea and Vietnam, and his brother fought at Iwo Jima in WWII. Despite all our attempts at increased security, we have inadvertently accomplished the terrosits' aim: terror. We now live in fear, and we are progressing further and further towards an Orwellian nightmare. Read 1984 if you want to see what I mean.

If you want to label me as a conservative frump, then so be it. But, I am 19, and can say that I have a lot more respect for people such as Gen. Foss. And a little whippersnapper of a 19 year old like me at least knows what the freaking Congressional Medal of Honor is and what it looks like!

Go ahead and flame me if you wish. Though I may never fight for the USA with guns or tanks or ships, I can at least fight with such weapons as truth, honor, and integrity.

I'm surprised that the airport security crews could actually speak English in this case. All of the ones I have encountered recently could barely speak the language, or for that matter, Spanish. Where do they hire these people from?

It is a damn shame, to see something like this happen. I know a pretty good deal about Joe Foss, but I have not met him. Would love to, though.

I fail to see the point here, and try to NOT flame me. So its a crime against humanity because a veteran was hassled at the airport? I am not going to take this in a direction I could for fear of having the thread closed, but what is so special about him being held up at the airpot?

Is the point your trying to make is that a bunch of Muslim men were able to get on a plane carrying box cutters and other small weapons yet this American couldn't get on with his metal? If you noticed the date, it was from this month. I am glad they stepped up security. It never said he was picked out of the crowd and treated unjustly or anything to that extent. Everyone should go throw rigorous screening, not just young Muslim men who are the "picture perfect terriorists".

What about all the Muslims who have been targeted by hate crimes? I find that alittle worse than a veteran who was held up at the airport for 45 minutes.

Am I missing the value of this article?

I think I have to agree with Irobodden on this one. Just cuz the dudes a war hero dosn't mean he shouldn't be checked before getting on a plane, and he was held up for 45 minutes, don't they tell you to show up 2 hours early anyways? And it should have taken longer anyways because he couldn't go through the metal detector.

                  ENDO!

No, the point isn't that he got checked at the airport. The point that Army was making was that they didn't even know what the Congressional Medal of Honor was. Any student who knows their US history would know what the Medal of Honor is.

So the Medal of Honor is a free pass on the plane?

My Aunt just flew back into the states from Mexico, they were literally strip searching every person. She wasn't even allowed to bored the plane with a lighter.

We all know what the Congressional Medal of Honor is, but those who work at jobs such as airport screener are usually not the smartest person. If you want them to all be well educated Americans why don't you write an airlines to the FAA. You could state you'd be willing to spend a considerable more amount of money so that the screeners all passed American History. Sound like a plan?

Let me say this one more time. This is not about the fact that the General was searched. In light of 9/11, I agree to searches. Army is instead making a statement about the American educational system as a whole. You'd be surprised at the amount of people that do not know who Neil Armstrong was or on which coast the Pacific Ocean is.

And speaking of airport searches, I am just wondering how far it will go. What if a terrorist has a bomb implanted in his body? Are we gonna start slicing people open then?

Lord Vader, yes, exactly. GEN Foss himself fully understands the reasons to be searched and secure, as a Veteran he would be first to volunteer to be searched.

irbodden; The MOH is a virtual free pass to nearly anywhere in the US or it's territories. The lowliest Private that has recieved the Medal, gets an automatic salute from the highest ranking General, for the rest of his life. The MOH is not simply a bit of metal that won't go through a detector. Men, soldiers, friends die not trying to win it, but winning it by saving their fellow man, soldier, friend in situations that are considered impossible to survive. The shear guts and determination that soldiers find deep inside themselves to overcome horrendous odds, in horrible situations, to save others lives, cannot be expressed by the written word. Indeed, every man who holds the MOH has never said he was brave, just scared enough to try and stop further horrors. To a man, they will tell you that they did not win this for their own bravery, but for those men whose lives they saved; "I wear this for them".

Have you ever heard of Joe Foss before this thread? Do a search and find out about this man, this Hero, then ask your history teacher about him. I'll lay odds your teacher doesn't know.

Yes, ignorance is a pet peeve of mine, for there is NO excuse for it. Open a book, go to the Library, do searches on the web, ask your parents and grand-parents and great grand-parents about their lives and how they lived their lives in our country. To be ignorant of history shameful, to be ignorant of Americas real Heros is also shameful, to be ignorant of the honors earned by men such as GEN Joe Foss is shameful.

To say; "Just cuz the dudes a war hero dosn't mean he shouldn't be checked before getting on a plane, and he was held up for 45 minutes, don't they tell you to show up 2 hours early anyways? And it should have taken longer anyways because he couldn't go through the metal detector." is a statement of pure ambivalence. The fact that not only is he a war Hero, but carrying proof of that, should indeed allow much leeway in his treatment. HE HAD NO PROBLEM GOING THROUGH THE CHECKS! The stupid dolts who had no clue what the hell the MOH is nor what it looks like, or who Joe Foss is even after an ID check was performed, should be fired. Indeed, should have been fired on the spot. If they don't know, then they should be replaced with people who do!

If it were my airport/plane, the Medal of Honor would be a free pass on the plane.

I do find it disrespectful that they even took that nail file away from him. If you fought for your country for years and were a general(retired or not) I think you should be able to bypass that airport security. Air Marshals can get on planes with loaded guns easier(less training, commitment, and they get payed to do it) than a veteran general with a nail file and Medal of honor. Thats horrible.

I wish history was more stressed in our schools. I have never even heard of General Joe Foss.
