    External Sound card

So, here I am looking for an external sound card that connects via USB.

Cost isn't really an issue, but I'm not sure of what's good and what's not.

If you can help that would be fantastic.

Depends on the quality you want Creative do one plus there is another with multiple ports for connection to real amplifiers caled I think Airport (maybe Gigaport not 100% sure of the name really), though obviously with that type then you have much higher cost with the connection cables, amplifiers and decent shielded speakers.
What are you looking to use this for?

Recording on the go. I'm using Logic Pro on my powerbook now, and I want something with multiple inputs to record in simultaneously for drums.

Then you don't want an external sound card at all as that is for output you want input.
I will check but the multiple connection "card" (box actually) I spoke about above I am pretty sure doesn't work in reverse.

Ok found a link to the box, it is called a Gigaport and no it doesn't appear to work in reverse.

pcdj.co.uk is your first and best source for information about pcdj. Here you will also find topics relating to issues of general interest. We hope you find what you are looking for!

This should do what you want, getting a bit bulky now though

getting more expensive but more inputs

These are obviously in the UK but with the model numbers you can find them yourself with US dealers. Might even be cheaper for you.

Powerbook? I don't know of a USB audio device that's not discontinued, (ie. the Maya44 usb) But, there a bunch of firewire devices that
            do it

Does it need to have Preamps?(Mic or line Level), How many inputs/outputs? You say cost isn't an issue, but when it comes to audio, it always becomes one unless you want to spend about what you would on a house.

I always say you can't put a price on audio quality, eh.

I do not want a preamp.

Is firewire an option? USB limits the choices a good bit.

Firewire is an option, I just said USB thinking that that would be my main options here

I will be using this with a powerbook and logic pro, if that helps.

Basically, I need 4-8 inputs so I can record on more than two tracks. It needs to accept 1/4" audio jacks.

                          Alright, Firewire makes things easier...

A pretty cool(but expensive) All-In-One solution is the Digidesign Digi 002. It's a control surface for Pro Tools LE with 8 analog inputs(4xlr, 4 1/4"). It can also run standalone away from a computer as a regular ol' mixer. I've never used one(I've used the rackmounted version) but ProTools is somewhat of an industry standard.

Digidesign Digi 002 LE FireWire Music Production System. 32 tracks of recording and playback. Built-in analog, digital, and MIDI I/O interface. Control surfa...

But you say you are using LogicPro so you might not want to switch to ProTools(I assume they are comparable, I've never used LogicPro).

                          Looking around I see this:
                          M-Audio Firewire 1814 Audio/MIDI Interface (Macintosh and Windows). 8 In/Out ADAT Lightpipe. 8 In / 4 Out 1/4 in. jacks. S/PDIF In/Out.

MAudio Firewire 1814...I've never used it, but it seems to be what you are looking for. 8 1/4" Analog Inputs. Two XLR inputs w/ Preamps in case you ever need a Mic plugged straight in. Then 8 digital in's. I think I used some of MAudio's cheaper stuff in the past, never enough to form a real opinion about it though. Keep in mind, it isn't proffessional stuff, but i'd say its above the typical consumer level.

Here's a nice list of Firewire Interfaces:
FireWire audio interfaces send multichannel digital audio in and out of your computer. Try a FireWire interface for lower-latency monitoring while recording.

Find something in your price range and search for reviews, etc.

Take a look at a few of the Digidesign systems. They are a bit pricey, but I am sure they will have a system that will do just want you want.

I have had a Digidesign Sessions 8 for about 10 years now and it's still a great unit.
