Laptop power supply BEEPING, no power to computer

Why did my computer to hate me this past week? *sigh*

    Dell Inspiron 9300

The power to our dorm room burped before, off and then back on about a second later. My laptop was plugged into a decent surge protector, but after the quick outage, the laptop's been running on batteries. I noticed a beeping sound, and it's coming from the physical laptop power source. The light on the source isn't on, but the beeps are definitely coming from inside that box, and power isn't making it to the laptop.

This thing's a monster, and I've only got about a half hour of battery time left. Google's not helping. I think I'll turn it off now and keep searching for an answer from a different computer until I figure out what the hell's going on.

Any ideas? This just doesn't make any sense to me.

Imageshack is being stupid so here's a picture of what's beeping:

It's the boxy looking part that the beeping's coming from, and where the light is that ISN'T on.

mabey its not getting enough voltage.

the thing that is beaping usally just regulates the votage down to what the battery is operation at.

soo either its beaping because its not getting enough voltage to power your computer battery or is getting to much and its an warning noice.

I suggest packing up the laptop and sending it back to Dell and getting a new one. It seems you are having WAY too many problems for such a new laptop.

I'll stand behind Dell laptops as I have used so many over the years at work, so it's not Dell, it's just your laptop.

you know i was woundering i have seen dell fall apart from their quality they usally had

my buds father (dj89) just got a laptop from dell and the wireless addapter in it was not working at all and the computer crashed the first time when he first got it. well the people at dell told him that he would not replace the computer and insted game him a new harddrive and the software.

now theres something eals wong with it. and this has been going on for a year and they have gave him tones of crap.

I have only own a compaq and i have to say they have the BEST servise i ever have and quality. my fathers desktop has never had a problem with it. and my laptop that i just got has never faild me yet.

sorry to get off topic but i had to say my thoughts about dell cuse i trully think that dell is going under

I have an inverter that beeps at me, when there is a short. The power spike probably shorted out the AC adapter. Have you tried plugging it into another outlet, outside of the room?

Yep. Still beeps, still doesn't transfer power.

yeah, before you send it in...plug it into a new power adapter in a different room. Or... try a different computer on your power supply...

my bet is that it is the power adapter's fault.

The only dell support I ever had to deal with has been corperate support and it was for servers not workstations. So the people I got on the line were english speaking.

I have also talked to Compaq tech support (again corperate account and server related) and they were top notch, BUT! Since HP bought Compaq I have to say their support is about useless. I find it odd because in the Printer world HP support was great.

I currently have a Dell desktop, got it almost 3 years ago through an employee discount and I have not had one problem with it.

My family and I have always had Dell desktops, and they've been great. This is my first laptop, and I had generally heard good things. *shrugs*

Good idea Kev, I'll find someone else in my hall with an Inspiron... shouldn't be too difficult.

Take the speaker out of the power supply. Beeping solved.

Those AC adapters generally have built-in fault protection.. If it got zapped and triggered the fault protection, that beeping is probably the AC's adapter way of telling you. That would explain why it's getting no power, as well, out of the adapter. Could be something as simple as replacing a fuse, or you might be SOL and it could be junk. That could explain the dead NIC as well.... What type of power strip/surge protector do you use? Alot of them have guarantees (the good ones, anyways) to protect against power surges.. Was your Cat5 cable going through the surge protector, as well, or was it going directly to the jack in the wall?

all of our ups systems here fail for 2 reasons
1-take too many voltage spikes and it screws up the ups system
2-the battery cannot hold a charge anymore

I think it is the battery pack.
