Thinking of picking up a WRX

Lately, my current car has been costing me more money than I would like and its getting kind of old. I have been loooking at mostly Subarus and some other all wheel drive cars. I am really liking the impreza WRX sti and the legacies. I am looking for 02-04, maybe 05 if the deal is right. Basically I'm writing this thread to maybe get some pros and cons of these cars. Just trying to research a bit before buying.

as a con, they are small and susceptable to death in the even of an accident, which may be more likely given it is a more performance oriented vehicle. I only say this because a very good friend and his wife died this summer in a legacy. The car was torn in half on impact, so that is the only reason i am wary of these vehicles. Other than a safety concern, i think they look like a lot of fun. I have reard that on the STI's people will sometimes break an axle trying to launch it at too high an rpm, but I trust you wouldn't be doing any of that...

Definitely don't plan on doing any of that axle breaking stuff. This will be the first performance type car I've ever owned due to being unable to afford the insurance. I definitely don't want any tickets. I'm sorry about your friends. The other reason I'm looking at subarus is that I want all wheel drive due to where I live and I work a second shift, so the roads can be quite bad when it is time for me to drive home. My commute is 60 miles round trip, which isn't bad compared to some. I have had one 4X4 suv type vehicle after another and they guzzle gas. Subarus get good mileage and they are just as sure footed in the snow. I don't plan on racing or driving whatever subaru I may get like a moron being I will probably be making payments on it.

If all you are really looking for is a commuter car than i would recommend just looking for a commuter car. If want you are really looking for is a performance car don't kid yourself and say you are looking for a commuter. Performance oriented vehicles tend to be more expensive to maintain as they use more exact expensive parts, and extra power usually means extra gas use. Just looking at specs for the imprezza packages the WRX cost almost 8 thousand more dollars with 3mpg less than the base impreza. That is new 2005, for used 2003 model the difference is about 3 thousand. So now if you are looking for a go fast car that gets respectable mpg the WRX is a sound choice, but don't kid yourself into thinking that you plan to drive it like grandpa's buick, cause otherwise why pay so much for a turbo? So what I'm really trying to say is that if you are going for economy, don't look for the fast model, instead maybe invest that money you would normally pay for the turbo into some nice factory options. It will save you money.

                  WRX
                  Cons:
                  Uses Premium
                  Rather thin paint
                  Rather thin sheetmetal
VERY High Insurance (like, more than an M3)
Very basic interior (manual dials for climate control, etc.)
Stock shifter kind of rubbery (get the short-throw option)

Off the top of my head. There are obviously a lot of pros too, but the best advice anyone can give is to probably go drive one yourself.

QFT. There aren't many better ways to lose 50% of your investment's value in less than a day...

You must be strong...they weigh ~ 3,100 lbs...you should try to pic up something lighter...like a four wheeler...or dirt bike...start small or you might hurt yourself...

On a more serious note...they're nice cars, worth every penny until you decide to wrap one around a tree upside down like the crazy rally guys from subaru do every now and again...enjoy...and remember...the streets are NOT a rally race...

Thank you for your input everyone. I want an impreza wrx because they are just awesome. I've owned some kind of fast cars. I have driven an 03 wrx sti and it was just an awesome car. I fell in love with them that day. They handle great, they have plenty of power, and they just look cool as hell. I am probably going to go with a normal wrx. I don't really see the need for the sti, unless I find a good deal. I seriously don't plan on driving it like a retard. I've matured alot behind the wheel since I was younger. I just figure that I deserve a cool car. My fiancee and I make a little over $100k with our incomes combined. We just bought a new house and were doing good financially and that is the car I want. I may speed with it sometimes, but who doesn't speed? I have only broke 100 plus mph once in my life and that was when I had an eclipse when I was 17. I'm 23 now and I feel I'm mature enough to have a cool car like this. I've made tons of mistakes in life in general and I'm doing great now, so I feel its time for a cool car.

If you are going to be lifting a heavy object, it's unsafe to lift with your back. You need to lift with your legs to be safe. This is even more important with an object as heavy as a car.

                            So, lift with your legs.
