    trillian instant messenger

i love it... trillian is a messenger system so that you can put yahoo, aim, msn, icq, and irc. its awesome, everything in one box, very orgnaized, no add on crap you dont need (like toolbars or weather additions) you can also change the name of somebody from "oELEPHANTo" to "mike". its also free. thats the best part. if you want the pro version, it costs a few $$... but you really dont need that.

here is a quote directly from the maker (Cerulean Studios):

Trillian is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. It provides capabilities not possible with original network clients, while supporting standard features such as audio chat, file transfers, group chats, chat rooms, buddy icons, multiple simultaneous connections to the same network, server-side contact importing, typing notification, direct connection (AIM), proxy support, encrypted messaging (AIM/ICQ), SMS support, and privacy settings.

Without stealing your home page and with no other included software, pop-ups, or spyware, Trillian provides unique functionality such as contact message history, a powerful skinning language, tabbed messaging, global status changes (set all networks away at once), Instant Lookup (automatic Wikipedia integration), contact alerts, an advanced automation system to trigger events based on anything happening in the client, docking, hundreds of emoticons, emotisounds, shell extensions for file transfers, and systray notifications.

Version 3.1 adds a new identity feature that helps you organize your home and work contact lists, HTML editing for AIM profiles, UPnP support, enhanced IRC performance, and speed enhancements.
    spreading the joy.

    I hate the Trillian interface.

When I used linux, Gaim was my choice. There's a Windoze port now, gaim.sourceforge.net

Now on OS X, I use Adium, which uses the gaimlb resources.

I've been using trillian for a while now.
The best part is it saving previous conversations in the chat window even after being closed.

oh yes~! i forgot that part. i love the history when im dealing with people, because if they are offline and they sent me a link i can go and look it up... or if they are trying to change something that they said i can look it up.

ive used it for about a year.

Is it just me though, or has the AIM fad totally died off?
I use it pretty much to talk to only a couple people now. I leave it on all the time in case anyone has a non important message they need to send me, its less formal than email. Quicky to reply if they are still on.

It takes a little while to get used to trillian, but once you use it you'll never go back. Give it a try. And no aim isn't gone.
