Auto Legality Issues

So, my dad has the titles and insurance policy for this car ('93 Cougar XR7) everything is under his name. I don't technically live with him (only "visit") and so his agent said I can "borrow" the car without any insurance of my own.

Now, it all is kinda shady because my dad doesn't want anyone else getting involved and my mom is wanting me to send the info to her agent to make sure it's "legal". Now as you can tell, I'm stuck..

I really have to idea who to believe, what to do, etc, so I'm asking anyone here if they have similar experiences to help.

Depends on his insurance. You can usually be covered under his insurance in most cases. Sometimes they do not cover drivers under the age of the insured.

Well, I trust my dad on this, because he also let me borrow his 3/4 ton extended cab/bed work truck to help a friend, and it was my first time solo'ing so I really do believe that it is okay for me to "borrow" and drive this car. I mean, if it wasn't legal, would he risk his truck?

If your not living in the residence of the insured and your not listed as a driver , 'You' are not covered nor the damage you cause to persons or property but the car still likely is.

Depending on the specifcs of his coverage. Considering it's such an old car it's not likely that his coverage would be so comprehensive...if it was then he's likely greatly over covered and paying to much to insure that vehicle.

Under my policy my liability coverage follows me around, regardless of what I am driving... my car is also fully covered, as long as a licensed driver is driving it.

But shartly, did your daughter have insurance of her own? I have no insurance, so I don't have anything that follows me around.

I mean, I'm gonna check with the agency to see if the car is covered as long as the driver has his/her license.

Of course I can't speak for every state but just recently (Florida) went thru a similar case here and liability only covered the person who 'had' the liabilty coverage...not the un-insured unrelated driver of the car.
