I have a 10 gig 3g Ipod, one of the older ones with the seperate buttons above the click wheel. It had a $40 battery replacement a year ago (bought it off a website installed it myself) and it is worth every penny. The newer ones are smaller and hold more and I'm thinking of getting a new one this year. I've had mine for 3 years now and I bet it'd go for about 5 more if I keep taking care of it. Also everyone in my family has an ipod mini and my friend has the nano....and they all enjoy them.
If you really want true portability buy the nano, but make sure to get a case cuz it is scratched easily.
If you cant live without all of your music at your finger tips buy the regular ipod and again a case is crucial.
Edit: My sister went through some rio's before the Ipod mini and she hated them. She said Itunes is so much easier to use. Now I say Itunes is better looking then windows media player and is about the same to use since they are both so simple and easy.
