    The lesser of two evils?

First I want to say that this is a hypothetical situation. Any similarities to anyone real or imagined is purely coincidental.

A good buddy of a good buddy has a serious problem with life in general. Many bad decisions have been made to lead this individual to a point where they are not only making life difficult for themselves, but anyone and everyone who has anything to do with them. This individual continues to make bad life decisions in many aspects of their life in spite of the informed advice of many friends.

This individual has come to the point where friends are ready to write off years of friendship just to let this individual sink or swim on their own. Having a friendship with this individual has become almost burdensome when considering the luggage this person carries around.

This individual is right on the verge of suicidal. Extremely volatile and unstable. At this point telling them to "get a life" could end up with a really bad ending. At the same time continuing to pursue a relationship will end up bad as well.

Whats the lesser of two evils?

agreed, get this person mental help/therapy. There are obviosly some serious problems for this guy or gal from what you described. Be firm in getting help for this individual, but I would try not to be overly confruntational. It is better to be confrontational then not to get this person help. It is better s/he is POed at you for awhile and thank you later than you cutting them off and them doing themselves bodily harm or worse...

get him help, its the only thing you can do, and only he can make the decision to stay. also, i reccomend reading A million little pieces by James Frey, a man who hit the rockiest of bottoms, and clawed his way back up.

For example.. the opening of the book starts off with james on an airplane, his eye swolen shut, missing his front 4 teeth, and a hole in his cheek that he could put a finger through.
