Fugitive found in folded-up sleep sofa
    Tuesday, January 10, 2006

    By Torsten Ove, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Greater Pittsburgh Fugitive Task Force today caught a wanted man after finding him hiding inside a sleep sofa in the basement of a Wilkinsburg house after his relatives said he wasn't there.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Tad Thompson said officers arrested Omari Horton, 28, who was wanted on two bench warrants for failure to appear in court on drug charges in two separate cases.

Deputy Thompson said officers tracked Mr. Horton to a house in the 8000 block of Fahnestock Avenue, where he was living with family. Family members said he wasn't home but gave consent for a search.

Officers swept through the house, including the basement, where they saw the sleep sofa and even picked it up and moved it. They couldn't find Mr. Horton, but Deputy Thompson said they suspected he was there because of conflicting information about when he had last been there and other evidence that he was living there.

On a second sweep, they tried the sleep sofa again, this time opening it up. Inside, they found Mr. Horton tucked inside. He had removed the inner mattress and lay down inside, then replaced or had someone replace the cushions.

He must have been making some noise for them to decide to check the sofa a second time and open it up.
