    mitsubishi 3000gt

ok im really set on buying a 3kgt. ive made calls but i cant find any around here. i found some on ebay in my price range (6k) but ive never shipped a car or anything close to it. so do you guys know any dealers around your area who may be selling one in the 6 grand price range??? i would have to ship it. but i would trust dealer more then just some random person on ebay and i get sent a lemmon. a dealer would prya be safer to go through.. also have any of you owned/drove on... what do you think of them....

    thanks

Are you making a cash deal or financing? I can give you some tips on having a dealer find one for you if you are doing it as cash

Too heavy for the HP they produce, even the VR4's. Much more bang for the buck out there, on a car thats 4-5 years old and is no longer produced. not to mention, they're old enough now that more than likely any of them are going to be beat by the owners unless you get lucky and find one clean with low miles.

You better be damn sure you're getting exactly the car you want, because shipping automobiles is a pain and costs a ton. Make sure you've done your research on that aspect, it's no fun to deal with.

I have many friends with 3000GTs. Everything from Automatic Base Models that my mom's cavalier would beat in a race to 600HP VR4's. They're really cool cars but you need to make sure you REALLY want one. Check out www.3si.org That's the main 3000GT forum and there is LOADS of information there. They're good cars IF you take care of them. The 5 speed SL's are decently quick and respond alright to mods, but don't expect a WHOLE from them. The VR4's are definitely quick cars but are rather heavy and have significant powertrain loss especally at higher speeds. These cars are like the 300ZX, Supra, and RX7. They have killer looks, LOTS of potential, and you won't see one every time you turn the corner like you do Civics, SRT-4's (which are still Neons), and even WRX's and Evo's. Keep in mind that there are two main types of long time owners of these cars. The kind that can do anything they need to from changing the oil or swapping a new motor/transmission in themselves, or the kind that have the money to pay someone else to do it. Keep all of this in mind and good luck on your search.

I've purchased two vehicles off eBay. In both cases, I flew one-way and drove back. First trip was 1200 miles, second was around 1700 miles. It was cheaper to do it that way than shipping.

As far as trusting a dealer vs. a private person? 50/50 there. In fact, I'd say in a lot of cases dealers are out to screw you more than a private seller. Remember, used car dealers do it for a living....that means they have to sell or they don't eat.

It's all about risk tolerance. I can tolerate more risk so I felt comfortable buying off eBay. If I got screwed, I was prepared to deal with it. I'm taking a risk. The good side is that in both cases, i was very pleased with the deal.

Do what you feel comfortable about. If 6k is a lot of money to spend on a car...go for the deal that has the best chances for success. This would probably mean a local deal where you could have a mechanic take a look before you buy.

Don't get desparate. Desparate people lose money.

Honestly man, if you seroiusly want a 3000GT, or any slightly older car that isn't real common, you either need to have LOTS of mechanical know how yourself (or a dad or family member who will help you), or you'll need to set aside some money to pay a mechanic to fix it if something goes wrong. Also, if you're wanting lots of speed, DON'T buy an automatic and look HARD for a Twin Turbo. Several have swapped the 6G72DETT into their FWD SL's or base models. Its up to you, just remember if you want something that's not an everyday car, there's a price for it to be paid somewhere along the line.

Hush, teenage kids in "high performance" uncommon cars, especially those with turbos and/or stick shifts, make me a lot of money

/Of course, not the ones in South Dakota....

I personally feel any kid, under 18, shouldn't own a car like that.

Unless you have a lot of disposable income, I'd recommend something reliable like a civic or something. Tuner cars are fun, but talk about money pits...

                          3000gt

I own a 3000gt VR-4. I love it. It's fast, and it corners like it's on a rail. It's true, you don't see many of them around, specially the VR-4's.

Truth be told, maintainence is pricey, but when you get a car like a 3kgt, you have to expect it. I still think it's worth it, and the tuning potential is limitless.

BTW, I'm on the 3si forums as the same user name.

For a first car id probly reccomend something ALOT simpler and more common. ASlthough differant is good in many ways it also plays a HUGE differance to your wallet. ITs MUTCH better to have a common car you can afford to drive than a Kewl car sitting on the drive while you ride the bus cause your car costs too mutch to operate.

You want something cheap to buy, cheap to inshure, cheap to maintain and cheap to fuel.

If i had to start all over again id buy a 1996-1999 4 cylinder Ford Ranger base model. Their EXTREAMLY reliable and VERY easy to maintain Cheap to buy and i just love the looks of em. Inshurance is nothing on em and fuel economy is really good. Althout their not quick in any sense in stock form their is a decent after market following capable of makeing these little power plants potent little machiens. Their are even turbo kits available to get these little things going well enough to hang with most 5.0L powered stangs. Their also something diferant. Every 16 year old wants a sports car but a small sporty pickup is kinda outa the norm even more so with a 4wd truck. BUT then again im just a truck guy LOL and i have alot of experiance with Ford Rangers (i own one right now and had another one a few years ago).

IF ya dont mind a truck the toyota Tacomas are aslo great trucks but slighly more costly in every aspect. But if 4x4 is your thing the toyota is ALOT more capable than the Ford in stock trim.
