    satelite internet service

my geographic location will not permit cable or dsl or even wireless internet access, dial up or satelite.

    i'm sick of dial up

There are about 40 friggin satelite providers, does anyone have any information/insight on any of these?

    i looked at
    directway
    starway
    hispeedanywhere.com (best imo)
Only Nintendo could make a vidio game out of two fat italian plumbers who wanted to screw a chick in a pink dress.

I used a few different satellite providers in Iraq. Very nice and extreme speed, but cost prohibitive unless you are funded through a business!

Don't the satellite TV companies also provide that? Like Dishnetwork...

i do believe directtv offers dial up through yahoo
but we jsut got direcway and im fairly pleased with it, its not as fast as DSL but its a heck of a lot better then Dial up..but about 100x more expensive. be ready to spend some big bucks on it. Id reccomend Direcway, although i myself did consider Starband (i think you meant starband not starway) anyways its expensive and it took a while to get the guy to come out and set it up but he got here eventtually.

also tthe satellite is about 2x bigger then a dishttv dish and the modem is about 2x the size of a standard cable modem.

you can connect your networking gear to it just like dsl or cable. its a lot less reliable then dsl though; if anything happens you just unplug the modem and that pretty much fixes it unless its cloud coverage or snow or rain or w.e interfering. I havent had a problem yet (just had to reset it once).

Id reccomend going for it youll be much happier with it compared to 56k dial up

      good luck

Sat. internet is ok, its good for downloading, but somewhat faster then surfing with dial up, and as stated before, very expensive to get. You cant do any online gaming, due to the uplink time, but i like it anyways.

Dish Network and Starband are no longer together. You have to go to Starband directly

Direct is affiliated with Directway. Seperate companies but still cooperative.

If your interested and close, I have a complete set up of Starband equipment I will sell you cheap. Modem and dish. Last I checked this was like 800 bucks for the equipment. You do have to have thier guy install it though. You cannot do it yourself. Some sort of FCC rules about the power of them. But I sell you the stuff for two hundred dollar bills. You pay them a hundred fifty I think to install and your up and running.

I would say its about half the speed of DSL. At best. Much better than dial up though. Two way set up. Needs windows to operate the program for the modem.

Directs newer set up is a bit better as far as it does not need a computer running a program to operate. Its speed is about the same. And its now two way. Back when I first went into it Directways was not two way, you had to have a dial up and so I went with Starband. Now a days its a toss up except for if you don't intend to run a computer as a Gateway. Then Direct has that advantge.

Equipment costs is about the same. Except unless you buy mine! Anyone that wants a sweet deal on Starband modem and dish contact me. cphilip (at) cphilip (dot) com.

don't fall for the free equipment deal (it is not free, its a rental to buy). Its going cost you more in the long run.

Not to mention most satellite providers upload through your phone line which is dialup speed and download through the dish. Therefore... dont plan on gaming with it.

Internet/downloading only... gaming = latency of *insert rude phrase here*

Niether of them do that anymore. Direct way used to. But their newest modem does communicate both ways now. Both Starband and Directway upload via sattelite. It is however a reduced speed. However that speed is much faster than dial up. Still might not be enough for Gaming though.

I provided my email address. I am in Upstate of SC. And just ask around... I have good references. You will find me under cphilip most places and cphilipao on ebay.

I believe it was called the 360. It was the newest modem as of last year. Think it still is the latest edition for Starband. It was new as it had to be replaced due to a power surge taking the original one out. So its newish.

You don't need that modem your thinking about for networking. I had this thing networking just fine. Had a Home network set up on it all the time. You use one computer as the gateway that runs the software. Thats all you need to do is share that connection after that.

The way I had my set up was like this:

Windows based computer acting as a Gateway and running Starband Software, Modem connect to that computer by USB. Sharing on the ethernet connection.

A Linksys Wireless hub and a simple 4 place hub connected to that computers Ethernet board

Two other computers (Mac notebooks) connected by wireless (airport internal cards) and one Windows lap top also with a Linksys card in it.

I did have a couple hard wires from the hub as well. Rarely used them but did keep one old iMac hooked up that way.

this set up worked great. Just have to keep the one "gateway" on all the time for the others to gain access. I put that computer on a nice big Belkin battery Back up/surge protector. And I could trigger its reboot from several computers.

fairly easy thing to do. Simple set up.

I do believe Directway's newer modem eliminates the need for a computer running as a gateway though. That was not the case when I first decided which to buy.
