For Home protection theres nothing better than a shotgun. Preferably a pistol gripped one for easier turns around corners and doorways.

Pistols are great for carrying when your going somewhere. Or in the Car.

I have kids... yeh, I'm going to whip out the shotgun in case of problems, the ones locked in the combination safe. oh wait, or the pistol that is normally on my belt, or in the quick access safe. Come on now, what do you think.

Usually cant miss in the dark with a shotgun....have fun with your pistol. There are things called Trigger locks, work just as fast as a Quicksafe....and who sleeps with a belt on!!!

Coach Guns are decent for home defense and can serve a little double duty at CAS events.

You should avoid a 1911 for home defense, especially if you have not been shooting them that long. The 1911 is not a double action gun, and so it requires you to pull the hammer back before firing the first round. When the SHTF, thats something that might easily be forgotten.

A better choice would be a double-single, or a double action only (including glock-type mechanisms). I own 3 sigs, and am rather fond of their design, but glocks and HKs are also good choices, and I also like Kahr arms guns. I'd go with a .40 or .45 for stopping power. You could also go with a revolver, which are fairly idiot-proof, but as mentioned before, reloading them under stress is more of a challenge.

Another good choice for home defense is a shotgun, as it has lower penetration and has a nice area effect. I also like AR15s because of the 5.56 stopping power, but thats just me.

20 gauge for the house, loaded with #4 shells (less recoil for the lady to contend with during practice with upland hunting loads, yet can deliver nearly as much punch as a 12 gauge with heavy shot. Across-the-room range makes the gauge size moot) Mossberg makes a "combo" package that comes with a long and short barrel, plus a pistol grip.

.45 for fun and adventure (lady can still effectively shoot these auto's, with practice. Females are some of the worlds top shooters with 1911 types pistols) My personal favorite handgun. Nearly all .45's are Mil-Spec, meaning they all shoot the same with the same parts inside. Springfield is a very good, yet relativily inexpensive handgun.

.22 for tons of fun and adventures (Anyone can shoot a .22. Plus, it makes the perfect pistol for hiking and camping) Take your pick from amny makers. Revolver or pistol, either will fill the fun bucket!

Nothing is overrated when it comes to your personal protection. What YOU are comfortable with and can shoot accurately is 10X better than a gun you are scared of and cannot handle. That the shotgun can deliver such a devastating payload far beyond anything from a handgun, is the #1 reason Police use them for entry weapons. BTW, the mythical "spread" of the shot pattern is barely larger than your closed hand at bedroom range....yes, you must still aim the weapon to hit your target.

other than that home purposes I would suggest a .22 caliber pistol or 9 mm pistol anything over that for self defense purposes is overkill. besides the self defense pistols we have at home are seperate from clips and the clips are loaded with rubber bullets.

Absolutely true. I saw a FAT guy take 6 center mass, and keep coming. I about made a mess of my pants when I saw that. 99% of the time the .45 will do it no problem.

On the other hand I saw a cop get hit with a .22lr in the arm. It traveled up his arm into his body cavity and ruptured his aorta, killing him after about 3 minutes.

I was just relaying some of the weird things those rounds are known to do.

I keep a pistol concealed near my bed in a quick access safe. Chances are I practice more wtih my pistol than most people do with a shotgun, and the full length of my house is a short short. Again, I'm not going with a shotgun because of the placement of my kids rooms. As to the dark. My house is mostly on motion sensor lights. Meaning if your entering chances are your in the light, certain rooms in my house are not on sensors, chances are, I'm shooting from the shadows at an illuminated target :). Good luck with the chance of me missing. I question a trigger lock being as quick as my quick access safe...

Ill admit i did not read all of the replys but id strongly reccomend taking a hunters safety course offered by your state. I recently completed mine and if youre new to firearms then this a also a great course to go along with a concealed carrying course. This is also a great course even if youre not new to firearms. I know I have been around firearms for a lot of my life and i learned tons of new things.... good luck

Revolvers can yes :) The .460 S&W can shoot 454 Casull and 45 long colt. There is some interchangeability on revolvers. Consult a reputable source before guessing

I've thought about this a lot... I've gotten a lot of "what, you some kind of wimp?" comments; but I'm not going to be putting tons of practice with a shotgun, and I figure control is more important.

/although, when the zombies attack, there will be more 12ga laying around
