    I don't know 100% of it. But:
Saint Patrick was a major force in early Irish Christianity for missionary work. Saint Patrick supposedly rid Ireland of snakes. Snakes were supposedly associated with the pagan druids that were the main religious force previously.

As for the party. Having family over for corned beef and cabbage in a few hours. Sister is bringing soda bread from the bakery. The whole house smells like corned beef since it has to cook like 3 hours.

Not a big drinker so no green beer. Green beer is just an excuse for everyone (non Irish included) to get stupid drunk. Now if someone breaks out the Jameson, I'm all for sippin'. Maybe an evening Jameson Irish coffee.

I thought so too but this is not the case. This is from the history channel's site:
      ""

Maybe the removal of snakes was symbolic of his converting the Druids to Christianity and purging the land of the Druids polytheistic religion. Snake could be an apropriate symbol from the Catholic perspective, as the thoughts were that the druids worshiped unholy gods. Thoughts may have been that these false icons were the "fallen angels" (one of which is Satan who apealed to Eve in the form of a snake) who had tempted the Druids. Maybe I am overanalyzing the story.
