It does seem rather 1 dimensional but still open ended. You do things to influence your race, see how it goes, rinse, repeat. I'm sure it gets repetetive sometimes (just like the sims), but it still leaves room for tons of open ended choices and creative ideas. If they came out with a real time multiplayer, intergalactic wars would be awesome. I'd imagine the game to become something like the new Star Wars RTS.
