last I checked you can get a decent kodak, 5mp 3x optical zoom, for under $200 at Wally World...

or you can get a Canon 3 or 4mp for similar price. I have a 5 mp Kodak.. and I love it. although I hear the quality on a Canon is higher, not to say Kodak's arent good because they are better than a lot. So yeah, check out a Canon or a Kodak.

for 260 you can get the dc 200 i believe, sony cybershot, 7.1mp, 3x optical zoom, small, light, awesome little camera. Just go to sears, or best buy or circuit city etc and look around. i dont reccomend going to kodak, their quailty is pretty poor, thats why you see them for so cheep.

In the 200 Range make sure to get quality, Megapixels does not = quality, the bigger the camera usually the bigger the CMOS sensor which = better. Make sure you get your camera and know where the Lens are coming from. A lens has a lot to do with its quality too, make sure you can set things like shutter speed, ISO, exposure etc on your own, fast on times and fast picture taking is also a plus. Its either Sony or Kodak that I think uses lens from Lecia (heard from an iffy source)

Maybe you can find an older SLR for cheap used which will be better than a consumer camera that has twice the megapixels

All P&S digicams use CCD sensors. Canon DSLRs and one Nikon DSLR have CMOS sensors. The snesor size in a P&S has little or nothing to do with the cost. In the DSLRs it will generally be larger (APS-C size is common). A couple DSLRs from Canon have full 35mm sized sensors (EOS 1Ds mk2 and EOS 5D are the current models)

Sony had claimed to use Zeiss lenses for some time. Panasonic announced a cam with a Leica lens on it. Don't think Kodak has Leica designed glass.

My suggestion is look at Canon P&S models in the price range. You should be happy for a long time with a Canon for a number of reasons. I shy away from Sony due to the limitations of Memory Stick as a storage medium. I'm not a huge fan of SD with is the common format these days, but it's better than MS. Unless you plan to print big often, don't worry about mpix, get what you can afford. For a P&S 4MP is just fine, and you can do decent prints even up to 8x10 with that. If you just want images for the web and to look at on the computer, 2MP would be ok.

So, Canon is the general consensus of the photo savvy peoples?

I've seen Hexis's work, as well as Muz's So, i know i can trust their opinions

Nikon makes good stuff too. They would be my second choice behind Canon. I have heard (but now owned, so it's second hand info) that the interface on the P&S leaves something to be desired.

Remember, the first thing you want to do with any digital camera with "Digital Zoom"* is to disable it.

So which is better for you, the printer or the memory?

                      * "Digital Zoom" is really a nice way of saying center crop and scale. You can do it far better afterwards in some photo editing software.

                        Give us model numbers.

Also, check out www.dpreview.com. The reviews might be a bit technical, but they give honest pros and cons of the cameras.

Muz, I'm working from sunday's sale papers, they dont specify much.

I'd have to do some digging.

I'd like to spend little as possible, and the other ones would require more memory, so the 256 card is nice.

That one is a Poweshot A430

But, for 50 bucks more is Poweshot A530, one more MP, and free printer, instead of memory.

Is it worth the extra 50 for another MP?

In your price range...... ..... yes .

However, as you get up there I think the D200 is the finest camera in its price bracket. I'm seriously in love with it .

Hope you have fun with your camera (since everything was already covered already ).

Oh yeah, the Nikon D200 is a very nice camera. I really wish Nikon was even suggesting that they plan to offer a full frame digital SLR. I had to make the switch to Canon so I could get full frame. Tis ok, I gave a friend a couple of Nikkors for some EF glass. He's quite happy with his D200. I'm quite happy with my 5D.
