<Shudder>Did the 80s spawn EMO music?

I popped in an old Smiths CD today and I scared myself a little bit.
By todays standards would The Cure and The Smiths be considered EMO?

I wasn't a Cure fan back in the day, or now, but the people that were big fans.... I think would be comparable to EMO today. But The Smiths and other 80s bands have some pretty depressing music too.

So other 30 something year olds what you think? Current EMO listeners ever hear the aforementioned music and have any input? Or did the 80s spawn the goth music scene only?

/girlfriend in a coma (has this ever been used in a romantic comedy, it needs to be?)

A lot of the emo bands out there will most likely have the Cure and the Smiths as influences among others, but the likelyhood that they spawned an entire sub-genre of music is small. Emo is just the progression of that style. For some reason people feel the need to be part of something cool and different so they splinter every type of music into ridiculous amounts of sub-genres so they can feel like they have found "the next big thing." I'm fine with Emo and emo kids in general. They don't bother me and if they do, they probably wish they hadn't. As far as the goth thing, the goth scene has been alive and well since the beginning of the 80's. It just happens to be getting more electronic. A lot of what is labeled goth these days shouldn't be in my opinion. Evanescence is not goth, they are pop rock with a dark streak, for example.

The South by Southwest music festival down in Texas this past month had Morrisey there. I guess there was a 5 million offer for a Smiths reunion. He/they passed. I guess he isn't so dismall now by his own words. Grew out of it or modern medication works wonders...

/I still can't listen to How Soon is Now without picturing Wild Bill from Silence of the Lambs dancing around and 'tucking it back.

To start this off The Cure, and The Smiths both sucked balls then, and now. Thats like seeing these fat 12year old kids walking around in a AC/DC shirt... when we they realize that their music...sucked. Emo..a "type" of music basically with a bunch of guys who look like chicks crying about how bad their life is, its crap. All this electronic crap thats trying to come back, also needs to go... it wasnt "cool" back then and it isnt now, any idiot can go make a song on a microwave. Play instruements for christs sake.

the Smiths are generally looked at to have a hand in starting Indie music, i guess the cure might have spawned emo though, but i dont know enough about them to assume so

I prefer to play instruments for Satan's sake, but whatever floats your boat I guess. Was this barrage of opinion really necessary? If the Cure and the Smiths really did suck would they have hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe? I doubt it. It goes something like this, just because you don't like it doesn't mean it sucks. It means you don't like it. Get over it.

As far as electronic artists being talentless, that's a bunch of BS. Are you calling Mozart and Beethoven hacks? They used keyboards just as Aphex Twin uses keyboards. His just happen to be electronic. He designs and makes his own keyboards. He uses the technology available to create music. Whether or not you like it is a completely different subject.

What? No mention of Joy Division? Now some of their songs were pretty depressing. However, I for one loved the Cure and the Smiths. Along with Depeche Mode. The 80's...good stuff. However, this emo stuff...I refuse to understand. Guys in girl pants...it's like some dude running around in girl pants as a joke and someone actually thought it was cool!

The Cure is a goth thing , not really emo, if it compares anything, i would say the hair glam bands were more emo, singing love songs and depressing crap

                      then:

                      and now todays standards:

see the comparison? well, think you get the point. I hate that crap.
