    German Speaking Maggers

I resurrected the thread, go down towards the end of page one..

Alright, so here is the deal, my school does not offer German anymore, (It stopped in 2000). I am going to Germany as a student exchange next year, and since going there is costly enough I am forced to teach German to myself. So for the past few months, roughly 5 hours a week I have been teaching myself German, through the internet, dictionaries, and an old textbook (it still has the berlin wall...)

So I was curious if it'd be allowed, or if anyone would have the interest to keep a little thread speaking in mostly German.

    To start things off...

Mein name ist "Maggot6", ich will sprechen in Deutsche.

Ich habe fur vier jahre Deutsch studiert, aber ich kann nicht gut sprechen. Ich habe nicht Deutsche sprochen oder studieren fur funf jahre. Velleicht am August fliege ich nach Frankfurt mit meine freundin fur zwei woche. Ich mochte viele bier trinken, und an der Nurburgring fahren.

Boy, that really racks the brain, havent tried to use German in quite some time. Its a travesty that your school doesnt offer German any more. The rest of the world is right to mock us for being so uncultured, hardly anyone is multilingual any more. See if you can pick up the Rosetta Stone software for your studying, I hear its pretty good. Quite pricey, but there are a few ways to get it for free, some of them legitimate. I really need to get up on my German before I try to vacation there this summer.

Ach toll!! Eine ganze "thread" fuer Deutsch sprechen!! Ich habe fuer ein und halb jahre Deutsch studiert, und bin ich letzen Sommer nach Leipzig geflogen. Die Program (in Leipzig) dauert nur eine Monat, aber ich habe veil gelernt. Das Essen und Getraenk war sehr guet (ich hoffe dass Schweinefleisch und Kartoffeln dir gut gefallen).

My German is still kinda weak, I tend to mess up my cases and genders if I dont give myself time to go back and proofread my schtuff. Maggot, happy to help out here if I can. Any questions you have, or specific areas you want to work on, lemme know. If I dont know it, I can probably find it.

check out dict.leo.org its an excellent site to look up single word translations.

This isn't to criticise or flame, but I'll do what I can to correct your posts (feel free to do mine as well, lord knows I need to practice).

"Mein name ist "Maggot6", ich will sprechen in Deutsche." should be "Ich heisse Maggot6, und ich will auf Deutsch sprechen." Remeber to move any secondary verbs to the end of the sentence and into their infinitive form (you got the infinitive right).

"Wohen Sie(Sie - du) studiert Deutsche, in Deutchland oder Amerika?" Not sure which of these two you meant: "Wollen Sie in Deutschland oder Amerika Deutsch studieren?" (would you rather learn German in America or Germany?) -or- "Woher haben Sie Deutsch gelernt? Deutschland oder Amerika?" (Where did you learn German? Germany or America?)

Well, a Berliner is a pastry popular in Berlin. However, its common in German to put "er" at the end of a city to denote your citizenship there. So as far as JFK and his speech writers knew, all Berliner meant was a citizen living in Berlin. Had he been a world-pastry connoisseur, he would have known better . Not sure exactly what he should have said... probably Berlinbuerger, or something.

PS.... what the hell is Flugstelleschaft?!?!?

*smacks head* doh! Forgot about the lack of "ein" when refering to a profession or position.

I'd highly recommend you go pick up a book called 501 German Verbs... it contains ALL the conjugations for 501 irregular verbs... you really only need present and present perfect tense.

The real trick with German is that its easier to use the polite formal sentence structure, as it is A) Polite and applicable to any group of people/individual, and B) you only need to remember the root verb form. Some people may find you funny for always using it, but you'll be understood much better than if you mangle conjugations.

once you know a pile of verbs (a few hundred is a good start...) nouns are easy to pic up, until you get into compound words... knowing the gender of each noun is very important as well...

Prepositions are also very very helpful.

accusative: bis - until, durch - through, fur - for (don't forget the umlaut over the u), gegen - against, ohne - without, um - around.

dative: aus - out of, bei - near, mit - with, nach - after, seit - since, von - from, zu - to

accusative and dative prepositions change how the gender of the noun in question is affected in the sentence structure...

that's Fritz's German lesson of the day...
