I thought it sucked compared to like Secret Window in which the split personality idea makes sense and is real to the fact of being believeable

It may have been an internal "dialogue", and the others might not have seen Jack and Tyler talking. Marla comments on his inconsistent behaviour, not his talking to himself. The people who joined FC might have noticed that Jack/Tyler was insane or inconsistent, but maybe not. "Tyler" does nearly all the talking to the Club. In any case, the FC members were still so in need of direction that whatever he offered them, it was enough. It's a comment on our meaningless consumer society.

Like "Animal Farm", or "Brazil", it doesn't have to be believable to get its point across.

Most people who have seen it, seemed to like it.
