    Internet Freedom

OK the basic situation is that congress has a bill before it that will allow your isp to limit your internet access. What they are doing is they will set up a fee to allow their users to access certain web sites. So if say google does not pay with your isp you either could not get there or would be really slow getting there. This is going to effect everyone who uses the internet. The solution to this is as obvious as it is simple. Assassinations. Heck, we should be doing it already until the gas prices go down. Its just part of becoming an elected official.

Where is AOL listed as the bad guy? Look at the crap BellSouth tried to pull a while back, that's the issue at hand.

Should ISPs have the right to filter or shape traffic based on the destianation. Most folks I know feel like we are paying our ISPs to give us straight access to the net, not some subset of the sites, that they approve of. But then again, we don't want an unfilteres email inbox, do we? So where do we draw the line? Would you like it if your ISP blocked access to sites that have drive-by spyware installs on them?

It's nothing new, network prioritization and QoS already available it just hasn't seen much use outside of a home/corporate LAN. ISP's do not pay set monthly fees like we do, they get as wide a pipe their carrier can provide, OC-3, OC-48 etc and pay per bit through their lines. Lets look at MCI for example they own UUNet which powers about 70-80% of the internet they have to keep up with the ever expanding availability of high bandwidth connections, my FiOS for example is 15/2Mps plus TV scheduled to be installed soon. It can be argued that its more ethical to allow lets say a legal movie site like one person downloading a movie on Cinema Now at a snails pace have prioritization compared to the 1,000's of others downloading illegally over P2P networks utilizing their entire connection. France and some other countrys have already put the neccesary hardware in place to degrade the quality of VoIP calls made to POTs.

Well, the rub is that you are paying, and now they (the bellsouth scheme) want to charge somone else for your internet access.

I pay* my ISP for access to the internet. They pay for transit access to some tier 1 ISPs. They make money in the scale of things. That's all good. There is no reason they should feel like they can charge google because I use google. The sites I choose to visit, also pay their ISP. Should I have to pay google's ISP because I use google?

                      * Well I don't actually pay my ISP, but gratis is not for everyone.
