But where is the deep water fording kit????

I miss my Wrangler, a great fun vehicle! The only concerns you reall have is gas mileage (poor), softs tops are rather noisy at highway speeds, not the most comfortable vehicle for any distance driving. The 4Runner is nice too and better option for day to day road travel. But if possible I would still take the Wrangler!

If you buy a Jeep, or any vehicle, and offroad it, you will get bitten by the bug... to modify it.

After a a pocketful of mods...

Whatever i get though ill be fourhwheeling with it a lot now tthat I moved.

So on terms of reliability and maintainance what would be better, assuming the 4runner will be in 'decent' shape with not like 100k miles on it. .
You better be mechanically inclined or have deep pockets because people who are not mechanically inclined and don't understand four wheeling tends to get expensive, make me a lot of money.

Hah, Today we went up to Lake Tahoe for a hike, and I saw an awsome Jeep. So I wanted to find this thread for some ideas. Ive been looking for racks for my new unlimited and so I saw Pyros picture of the White Jeep and liked the rack. I then looked at the license plate and realized its the same Jeep as the one I saw today parked at the trailhead. Its a small world.

This may seem like a strange choice, but the late 90s Chevy Tahoe 2-door is a great pick. They are a great combination of stability, agility, and capacity.

At my workplace, there are basically 3 offroad vehicles to choose: full size 4x4 pickup truck, tahoe, or TJ Wrangler. The Tahoes are the oldest, with the most miles (100k-150k) and are driven on primitive/fire/service roads about 90% of the time. The Tahoes, regardless of whether the radio works or the AC works (typically important in SoAZ), are the most sought after.

Jeeps get very squirrely going over rough terrain at speeds greater than a crawl and they can't carry much. The full size pickups are just too big and difficult to manuever in tight terrain, though they can carry more and are very stable.

I'm even a Ford guy and I can't say enough good things about those old, beat up, Tahoes.

                            YMMV.
