MY new whip! (sorry Pyro) :-P

I bought a junk 1953 2.5 ton XM211 6x6 at an auction on the 18th. The cab is screwed up and the hood is all crushed but all the drivetrain is there and looks to be in good to very good condition.

Best part about it all is that I paid a mere $290 for this baby.

    Pics:

On our 30 foot gooseneck behind my dad's 2000 powerstroke.

Crunched hood and some extra parts stuffed in there.

Shot of the rear axles showing the spring setup. They're 3 linked to locate the axles and then just kinda float on the leaf spring packs.

Good shot of the rear diff cover.

    More pics!

Shot of the transfer case with it's two outputs.

Pic showing the split driveline for the rear most axle and the pillow block located on the middle axle.

Front end shot. The lever deals that look like an anti roll bar are shocks according to one website I found.

      Unloading time!

Our 920 Cat handling the front end and our old Michigan loader getting the rear.

      Same thing different angle.

      Yet another angle.

It's levitating!!!!! LOL. We ended up moving the cat around to the rear of the trailer to get a better angle on lifting this beast. We lifted her up and then just drove the trailer out from underneath it.

Thats amazing. It WILL take forever to restore however, so good luck .

I think yours needs more than a clutch

So anyway are you just ripping the driveline out or are you going to get it moving?

Lol... yeah it needs a bit more TLC than just a clutch replacement, but for less than $300 bucks I couldn't help myself. The only other guy at the auction that was bidding against me was just gonna scrap it out and melt it down. But luckily I ended up with it!

I haven't had much time to mess around with it, but I'm sure the engine and possibly the transmission are shot. The engine is a GM 320 cid straight 6 and the water pump is off of it leaving the cooling system in the open. Checked the oil today and it's full and looks clean. Who knows, it might even run, but I have my doubts. Heck I've got to do some research to find out if it's a 6, 12, or 24 volt electrical system too.

The transmission is a hydromatic that takes 30W engine oil. I've read some stories that they sucked and went out often, but it was because the people wouldn't let the oil in the tranny warm up before taking off.

If the engine ends up being shot I'll probably drop in a 360 FE block ford (maybe a 460 if I can find one cheap) and a c6 transmission. As for the cab I'm just going to swap a pickup cab on rather than try and repair the crunched stock cab.

What are those Dana 80's or something? Though I'm not a GM guy actually very far from if you can tell by my name I'm actually a Mopar guy an Olds, Buick or Poncho motors I forget which one but I think its Olds that makes gobs of torque would be a better choice. But 460s are relatively easy to find... just look for some smog era lincoln and youre sure to find one. Or a 500ci caddy engine 500lb-ft stock.

The axles are a 2.5 ton GM axle, but I haven't been able to find much info on them yet. I'm thinking size wise that they'd put a Dana 80 to shame. I'm by far not a GM person either, but heavy duty military stuff is awesome I don't care who makes it!

If I have to swap in an engine and tranny I'll definately go with a Ford setup because that's what I'm used to and know the best. In fact I've got a rebuilt C6 transmission that will bolt up behind a 351M/400/460 sitting in our shop right now. Just need an engine.
