Well, I go to the gym normally, and Ive decided to start boxing. I have a few friends who are going to do it, were getting full headgear and a set of 16oz gloves just to dump around. Its not going to be really serious, but some tips would help.... I know someone else here on AO has to fight...
anyone know about boxing?

I watch boxing on HBO all the time, but I think that shoot-fighting and mixed martial arts are better. You and your friends should kick box.IM SORRY AO FOR DISOBEYING YOUR SIG RULES!!!! FORGIVE ME!!!

speedbag, double-end bag, and heavy bag is great to work with, you get the speed, endurance, and weight in your workout. make sure to get a pair oif Bag gloves & tape, not boxing gloves for the heavy bag, use the Boxing gloves for sparring and stuff, my garage is turing into a martial arts dojo / gym currently

What kind of double-end bag you have? I've been looking to get one to help on my slipping and fast combos.Originally posted by evildead420speedbag, double-end bag, and heavy bag is great to work with, you get the speed, endurance, and weight in your workout. make sure to get a pair oif Bag gloves & tape, not boxing gloves for the heavy bag, use the Boxing gloves for sparring and stuff, my garage is turing into a martial arts dojo / gym currently

whats the diffrence between regular and southpaw?
Im right handed, so I tend to jab with my right hand... but my stance is regular.
does that mean I just have to get used to jabbing with my left, and keep the standard stance? I like hitting with my right but holding the southpaw stance is uncomfortable.Skittle- Your partner in crime.Comment

Well, you jab with your lead hand for the sake of having range. If you throw a snappy punch with your power hand, it will:Originally posted by Skittlewhats the diffrence between regular and southpaw?

a) reach the opponent slower
b) have less reach
If you like jabbing with your power hand, just practice southpaw until it becomes comfortable. It'll screw with your depth perception in the fight a little, but if you know the right southpaw strategy you should be able to stick the other guy with your strong jab consistently without worry of a cross counter. You just have to look out for the slip, step-in, and hook to the chin.
I myself am a lefty, so I naturally box southpaw. I'm so used to going up against orthodox and southpaws (almost all my good friends I practice with are lefties, I got some experience fighting righties too) If you learn to adapt to both styles, you can start switching. Switching will help you control the rhythm and spacing if you do it right.

The speedbag is defenitely a must I've gotta say. I love just getting into rhythm at speed. Too bad I'm home for the summer so I can't use the gym at my university.
40 bucks? does that come with mounting equipment and cables? What about the shape of the bag? Standard double end or double double or mexican?

thats what I got, never used the mexican style, looks like you can do hooks and cut punches with that thing, never used it though. since the floor is concrete, i had to make a eyehook on plywood and wieghts to keep the bag in place. doesnt move at all
speed bags are cheap but the platforms are the most expensive. whatever, i love it, i just carpeted my 2 car garage. its turning into a real fighting gym for me.

Didn't want to start a new boxing thread...
So, I've dropped 10 pounds since 16 days ago and I still need to drop another 10 to make weight in 15 days. Some trainers talk about doing a "dry out" to cut some water to drop more weight, this is obviously a pretty risky idea.
During and after my workouts I rehydrate, so I think I'm losing weight pretty normally right now. I have no clue at what rate I should be losing weight though since I actually haven't had this intense of a workout program. But right now I'm losing roughly 3 to 6 pounds a week. (First week: 3 pounds, Second week: 6 pounds, this week so far: 1 pound but I still need to rehydrate)
Do I continue my workout and dieting to hopefully drop another 10 pounds? I feel like I'm going to hit a wall within the end of this week because of the rate at which I've been losing weight. If I do hit that wall, would it be possible to carefully attempt a "dry out"?

what have you been doing to loose weight that fast? whats your diet like?
and dont quit drinking water, if youre loosing weight that fast then you may be lacking some nutrients, you need water above all else.Skittle- Your partner in crime.Comment

ytea, find your target heart rate. usually in a workout you want to achieve that atleast 3 times. and always drink water. or youll
1. pass out in excustion.
2. Throw up whatever you got in your stomach.
^^^ that can be bad^^^
A DVD i recommend you checking is the Ronnie Coleman Redemstion. Its a excercise and nutrition guide starring Mr Olympia. I know he's not a boxer but the tips for the proper workout are some of the best. you might get murffed out like that guy. lol. seriously though, check it out.
