    College Laptop

Well it's been awhile since I last posted, but I figured I could get some good advice from AO.

I'm going off to school in about 6 weeks and I'm going to be needing a laptop, I have about $1300 to spend. I'm going to use it for basic stuff, surfing the internet, writing, researching, and maybe some occasional gaming, but that is secondary.

So AO, what is the best laptop/ laptop configuration I can get for this price?

    grab a dell

they are pretty damn fast at turnaround even when your 100% customized

you can choose nearly every aspect of your laptop

i recently just got a inspiron laptop and built it from one of the lowest models and for $1,500 I got:

    17" widescreen "true xvga"
    Windows XP Media Edition (Free)
    1.7 Dual Core
    1 gig ram
    geforce 4 7900 (woot )
    TV Tuner (for college)
and all the rest of the standard stuffs

    for you i would recommend:
    512mb ram (atleast)
    1.5gHz (atleast)
    128mb video card (atleast)

    should come to like ~1200

agreed, get a dell. My friend got an awsome one off ebay(for 1300), new with warranty. He got it for his tour in Iraq, and he is loving it.

Only down side is, they just had a laptop explode a little while ago....

cant deny that 1 out of 1000000 + laptops did explode

i am a tech at a dell premier partner site, so we see ALOT of dells, and the actual reason this happend was because batteries were recalled but this one was never traded in for a new one.

I bought a refurb gateway that will do everything except gaming for about $500. If you drop gaming from the list the price can drop dramatically. For $1300 I have no idea what hte best out there in that range are. Sorry for hte minimal help

dell = best bang for the buck due to their 40% off deals they offer every once and a while.

I recently got my wife a Dell for school also: 15.4" widescreen, 1.5ghz celery, 1gig ram, 60gig hard drive, dvd/cd burner...for like $435. Cannot beat that for classwork.

I've found a 35% off coupon from ebay, so now my only question is 15.4" or 17"

I wouldnt get a mac , aside form the fact i hate them, becasue it wont be compatible with alot of the universities hardware 99% of the time. I know A&M barely uses any macs.....

                          and 17"....youll like it

Macs are definitly nice machines, but it's a PC world and I'm accustomed to the PC, so I'm going to stick with what's comfortable.

Look at Thinkpad's. The construction is much better than Dell's. You pay a 10% premium, but it's worth it.
