Throughout this summer I have been conversing with some friends/coworkers about getting together to build a moped out of an old bicycle. We are going to try to build this with as many free/dumped parts as possible. So far I haven't gotten anything. I was here to talk about a couple of the designs I have come up with. And get a little help.
Idea #1
--------
First idea of mine is to have a chainsaw mounted to the frame around where the crankcase is. It would be direct mounted to from the chainsaw sproket to the bike sproket using the bike chain. With this idea I will make a heat shield to keep my legs from burning up. I don't think it will be too much of a problem but I want to stay on the safe side. The only problem I have with this idea is that I am not sure of the RPM's of the chainsaw and if it will have enough torque to get me(135 lbs) moving from a standstill. Also I would have to add some form of gear to change the direction of the chainsaw so it would spin the right way.
Idea #2
--------
Same as idea above eccept chainsaw mounted on rack above back wheel. This would make it so I would not have to change anything about the saw. Problems would mainly be finding a place to put the gas tank(the one on the chainsaw would not last long).
Idea #3
-------
Not the best idea. Number 3 has the drive on the front wheel. Personally I like this idea because it will allow my to pedal the bike up to speed and start the motor to cruise. The downfalls are the extra bit of weight on the front and the fact that the motor will be very close to my hands. Again fuel tank placement will be hard.
Idea #4
-------
#4 consists of using a weedwacker and a crown gear. This idea is mainly just in case I can't find a broken/salvagable chainsaw at the dump. I think it would be a good idea but I would have to get the gearing correct or there could be catastrophic failure.

). its V belt driven to a 8" rear pully using a Crysler Lebarons belt tenshiner mounted to the pegs to keep the belt tight. OPut back the tire is a Trailer tire with coutome adapter pltes to work with the 5/8" Keyed axle the pully is mounted too with standard mounted bearings.
