    Motor scooter moped bike thing

Throughout this summer I have been conversing with some friends/coworkers about getting together to build a moped out of an old bicycle. We are going to try to build this with as many free/dumped parts as possible. So far I haven't gotten anything. I was here to talk about a couple of the designs I have come up with. And get a little help.

    Idea #1
    --------
First idea of mine is to have a chainsaw mounted to the frame around where the crankcase is. It would be direct mounted to from the chainsaw sproket to the bike sproket using the bike chain. With this idea I will make a heat shield to keep my legs from burning up. I don't think it will be too much of a problem but I want to stay on the safe side. The only problem I have with this idea is that I am not sure of the RPM's of the chainsaw and if it will have enough torque to get me(135 lbs) moving from a standstill. Also I would have to add some form of gear to change the direction of the chainsaw so it would spin the right way.

    Idea #2
    --------
Same as idea above eccept chainsaw mounted on rack above back wheel. This would make it so I would not have to change anything about the saw. Problems would mainly be finding a place to put the gas tank(the one on the chainsaw would not last long).

    Idea #3
    -------
Not the best idea. Number 3 has the drive on the front wheel. Personally I like this idea because it will allow my to pedal the bike up to speed and start the motor to cruise. The downfalls are the extra bit of weight on the front and the fact that the motor will be very close to my hands. Again fuel tank placement will be hard.

    Idea #4
    -------
#4 consists of using a weedwacker and a crown gear. This idea is mainly just in case I can't find a broken/salvagable chainsaw at the dump. I think it would be a good idea but I would have to get the gearing correct or there could be catastrophic failure.

Well If ya need ideas shoot me a Pm been their done that only i used a side shaft Brigs and stratton 5hp Preashurwasher engine and did a little welding. Useing the 5hp and a centrifical clutch with a 2" pully and a 8" rear pully take offs are REALLY slow with my 280lbs but it moves it and has hit a GPS meashured speed of 50km/hr (31mph) witch is REALLY scarry on this rig with only FRONT bycical brakes.

I built mine for a competition last summer at a charity bike event. The rules stated it had to use a lawnmower engein and you could only spend $300 on parts AND it had to be assembled from bare frame in 4hrs AT the event. once all were completed their was a 200ft back and forth drag race. My bike was the SLOWEST but managed third place out of the 9 due to breakdowns incompleted bike and disqualifications. BUT i had mine assembled FIRST in 45 minutes. Alll the other builders were pro bike builders around here im just a Diesel mehcanic who thought it sounded fun.

Basically my bike consists of: A SMALL Childs bycial, MY old HEAVLY damaged Bycical, The Drag link from a old School bus (cut up and arc welded to both frames of the bycials), some angle steel threaded rod and variouse hardware. Drive system is a 5hp side shaft Briggs & Stratton engein with a 5/8" out put shaft taken from a busted preashure washer with a home made Plumbing pipe exhuast to a 3/4" Inner diameter go-cart cetrifical clutch and a home made adapter made with 5/8" plumbing pipe left over from the exhaust useing the poor mans lath (screwdriver, Bench grinder, THICK GLOVES, Steady hand and some calipers to meashure with got it accurate to within a thousands of an inch ). its V belt driven to a 8" rear pully using a Crysler Lebarons belt tenshiner mounted to the pegs to keep the belt tight. OPut back the tire is a Trailer tire with coutome adapter pltes to work with the 5/8" Keyed axle the pully is mounted too with standard mounted bearings.

The engine is mounted from both the bottom Just bolted to the angle steel and up tome using the steering damper mounts from the dragling bolted right to the engein with two head bolts LOL. The trottel is controled useing the old rear brakes cable run directly to the thrttel on the carb it works great. Unfortuantly i had no more money to spend getting rear brakes setup of even fixing the fronts so it is INCREDIBLY scary to ride.

Here is my First run with it. Run one

    And some picks:

A pic of my bro riding it in the race (he's lighter than me).

So far I have gotten myself a bike frame. It is in decent shape. All it needed was a chain and a new fender but somebody still threw it away. I think it will give me a good base. Only problem I forsee is that it is one of those Unisex beach cruiser frames that has the two curving rails going down. I think I will reroute the upper of the two and pass it above the engine.

That is what now concerns me. The engine mount might be tricky. I do not own a welder so I will have to use a friends. The motor is going to either me a chainsaw or a weedeater. A chainsaw would be preferable because it has the sproket on it all ready so I can have a short chain from that to a second sproket on the bike's crankcase. Then the chain from the regular front sproket to the rear wheel. The other great thing about the chiansaw is the fact that it has a clutch built in so I won't have to buy one.
