OMG Ortiz Vs Shamrock was ridiculous I can't believe I paid money for it. But I hear at the rematch the Refs arn't stepping in until one is knocked the F out.

I'm thinking it will be Matt Hughes taking the win. Yes he's a little cocky but you can't walk into a fight thinking you'll lose.

In the match between BJ Penn and St. Pierre I didn't think it was that great of a fight. They gave the match to St. Pierre because of his takedowns, even though he didn't apply any punishment with it. And I do mean they "gave" him the match.. his face was bleeding and jacked up, and they didn't give any reward to the way BJ was able to get off the ground each time without taking a licking.. the man is insane with his ground defense.

BUT... I think that's what is going to hurt BJ. I think he's a little too defensive, and yes he caught Hughes before, but Matt Hughes is much better in every position. He's got way more confidence on his feet, he's much better with his submissions, and I'm not sure anyone is better with the ground & pound... maybe Franklin...

Anyways, it should be a fun match. This is the match that was supposed to happen.. I'm not sure if St. Pierre really got hurt or if the UFC felt bad for screwing over Penn with the previous decision, but I think this will be a way better match than St. Pierre versus Hughes.. I don't think it would take Hughes very long to put Pierre out again. Anyways, I'll definitely be watching, and enjoying this match. Matt is very physical but BJ is very patient. If BJ can catch Matt again, we might see him take the title back from Hughes again. It could be close, and I just hope it is a fun match.

                Good recap.
That first match with Jens Pulver was great. That skinny challenger kid with the big ears looked funny, and we were calling him "monkey boy" and laughing a lot.

I thought the first round wasn't impressive in the Hughes match for either fighter.. they were both cautious and fighting really tight and safe. I would have given it to BJ but not by much. Hughes had a few deep shots on Penn but just couldn't get BJ down.. that kid is insanely flexible.. unnatural and great and protecting from going down.

Second round there were a few punches landed from both, I think BJ had a few more solid hits but Hughes smiled after them. Then Hughes finally got the takedown and got a few elbows in then appeared to be trying to work a possible submission and Penn very quickly revearsed... and had hughes in a light triangle choke with his legs but where his legs locked was the part near Hughes' throat, so it wasn't a real threat. The armbar that Penn tried hooking in at the same time was almost a threat, but it appeared as the time was running out of that period that Hughes was already almost completely out of the hold completely standing up. Advantage Penn in this round too..

Third Round... Penn looked like crap.. just like in the St. Pierre match he was gassing. He must have burned himself out trying to choke out hughes in the second, because he couldn't keep his hands up to protect his face. Hughes beat the crap out of him on the feet landing almost every punch he threw. Then the takedown where Hughes worked up and got a knee holding down one of Penn's arms in a crossbody ride and his left arm hooking Penns other arm and his right fist and elbow rained punches down on Penn's face and Penn had no way to block it... Ref called the fight and as Penn tried to sit up you could see he was woozy... great fight for Hughes.

Best line of the night though was when they interviewed Hughes after the match he said "I just wish BJ was in shape to go the full 5 rounds tonight".. which was a huge slap in the face to Penn and his lack of conditioning.. like hitting a man when he was down. But then Hughes quickly showed the sportsmanship he is known for and credited Penn for the hard first two rounds and that hold at the end of the second. Then like Rogue said, stupid St. Pierre got in the ring and insulted Hughes, even though Pierre got messed up by Penn and had his match go to decision where the judges GAVE him the match even though he had blood gushing out his face, whereas Hughes dominated Penn. I'm glad though.. hopefully Hughes will fight Pierre next and beat Pierre so bad he retires.

In my opinion, Gracie was the best fighter in the UFC during his time.

Just thought I would add that.

I expected him to go down easily versus Hughes..

gracie is great but "his time" was over a decade ago..its alot different than it was in the early nineties, gracie is still a great fighter, and brazilian jui jitsu will always be respected because of what the gracies acomplished, no matter what hughes did to gracie, gracie is still a legend..as are guys like shamrock

^^^^ Most people do not believe the above is true. Most think it was a way for the UFC to make up for the judges mistake. Georges St. Pierre has not looked hurt at any time.. there was footage of him jogging the day after that statement was made. Trust me... I wrestled from the time I was five up into college.. you don't run on a groin pull. If you go back and watch the BJ Penn fight with St. Pierre most people can't believe they GAVE the match to Pierre. Penn bloodied up Pierre really good in the first round, and was dominant.. really laid a beating down. The next two rounds Penn was being really defensive looking for a submission chance. Pierre took him down a couple times but every time penn came right back up, and almost had an interesting choke from the bottom because of his insane flexibility. But the thing is, even though Pierre had gotten a takedown, he didn't do anything with it.. never got to get any real shots in on Penn, and Penn kept standing right back up and getting out of anything. Apparently they gave Pierre points for his takedowns but didn't give Penn any points for his amazing defense and ability to get up and counter Pierre each time without taking any punishment. I seriously think Penn felt more comfortable on the ground looking for submissions. Anyways, cut to the end of the match and you have St. Pierre with blood streaming down his face and then you have Penn standing there looking like he hadn't fought yet.. no real swelling.. no bleeding. It seemed obvious to most that Penn had kicked Pierre's butt, but according to the judges, takedowns were big point items that night and they handed the win to Pierre. The look on Penn's face was priceless, and he said something like "You have to be kidding me, look at him.. I don't understand how the guy bleeding and messed up is named the winner.. I'm not hurt in the least".

They got a LOT of angry calls and letters from fans, because of course it seemed like BJ had one, and everyone wanted him to win so Hughes would get this rematch. I guarantee that this match sold more tickets than the original lineup would have. I don't know about this next match.. I think a lot of people are going to buy tickets just to see the silly canadian get beat down. It seemed effortless the last time Hughes beat down then submitted Pierre... we'll see how it goes this time.

*** One more note, the groin pull happened a long time ago supposedly. Usually if you have a minor injury like that happen that far before a match, you know you'll be healthy or you'll give it some time. It just didn't make any sense. That's why most feel it was the UFC making up for a mistake ***

I don't know about the injury, BUT the fight everyone wanted was Hughes-Penn. It was the fight that Matt, UFC, and the fans wanted. Well that's what happened, no big surprise really. Who knows Dana may have paid George to sit this one out. I really doubt that George is ducking Hughes, my money says he will eventually get the belt anyway.

I for one believe the fight was called right between George and BJ. I had BJ for round 1 and George for 2 and 3. You can't take 1 round and coast for 2 and win the fight. People saw the fight they wanted, which was BJ coming out on top, it wasn't the same fight I watched.
