So I took the ASVAB a couple of days ago

Well do the some things that happened to me within the last week, I'm exploring the idea of enlisting in the military. I went and talked to a Navy recruiter and ended up taking the ASVAB that same day. Got my score in and I made a score of 81. Is this a good score? I'm assuming that a perfect score would be 100? If thats the case than I guess I got a above average score. I did take this test back in High School but never really found out what my score was.
I'm also a bit older than your the average high school graduate and have college experience. My recruiter inform me that I could be an E2 or E3 so I guess that would be a good start going into basic.

yes 81 is a good score.
its hard to explain how the scoring works but it can be looked at in a few different ways. your 81 is called the AFQT (if i remember right), which is basicly the over all score. AFQT is basicly like grading on a curve. think of it as you scored better then 81% of people that take the test. a pefect score is a 99.

next thing you want to look at is what you scored in each section (using the same curve scoring). each section will dictate what job (also known as MOS) you are eligable for.
say you want to be a boatwains mate (BM), it has a requrerment for each section. I scored a 70 somthing and i was eligable for every job in the Coast Guard, however that doesnt mean that some one that scored higher then me would be too, it depends on what they got on each section.

you can also retest as many times as you want if you didnt make the grade for the job you want. even after your already enlisted.

if you have the choice go in at the highest rank possable. its just less crap you have to deal with and more money, but there really isnt that much difference between an E2 and an E3 job wise, especialy in the NAVY.

Edit: oh and it doesnt matter what rank they say you are when you go to basic, you dont get treated any better or get to tell anyone what to do. in boot every ones a Seaman Recrute

81 is good. I wound up signing my army contract about a month ago after thinking about joining for about a year. I ship out jan 3rd to start my road to airborne ranger. I was able to have the majority of jobs available to me, i scored an 87 on the asvab. The only thing that kicked my butt is the math, havent had a math class in well over a year. Im headed into the army with E-3 status because of the limited college that i have.

Whatever you decide, make sure you really think it out. Try to talk to unbiased people that have already been in. I talked to many people in both the marines and the army before i finally decided to sign up. Good luck with whatever you decide tho.

That test is made for the lowest common denominator. By far. I'm almost suprised people who scored in the 70s can use a computer to post here.

Just remember, your recruiter is forced to be as shady as a used car salesman. If you have college credit, make sure your paperwork is turned in to get rank. Demand every single bonus available or they will try not to give you any, if they think that youll join without one. And do your best to find a job with good opportunities in the civilian world. Oh and dont join the army, theyll stop loss you.

when i joined i had a great recruter. i remember sighning the papers the day before i left and being like, " whats this paper for?" "oh thats your 5 grand bonus for A school" "oh sweet". i didnt even know i was getting a bonus.
but i have heard about some bad recruters so i dont doubt there out there, mine was just good.

I remember we got the day off school when we took it. Finished by 10:30 or so and were on the paintball field by 11-ish. That was a great day.

There are always the stories of the crooked lying recruiters but honestly, I have never met one. When I joined my recruiter was 100% honest and the liason officer at MEPS was more than helpful and also let me know of a bonus I didn't know I had. Likewise, my friends who

there was a section where with some pictures of a few hand tools. If I remember correctly they ask which tool was a coping saw. I almost lol :rofl:

My recruiter was perfectly honest with me. If he didn't know the answer to a question I had, he said so, and added that he would try to have that answer by the next time we met.

The most important thing I can suggest is to ensure that you have a guaranteed specialty before you enlist.

Don't let anybody talk you into going to boot camp without it. Sometimes, they'll bill it as a great way to learn about various specialties before going into it, but you end up having a far smaller group of specialties to choose from later. The guys in my bood camp company that went without a guaranteed specialty, ended up as cooks...or worse.
