CRAPPPP!!! My main computer just fritzed

Well apparently my main computer just went the way of the dodo bird. I came home and the "processor" led was just blinking rapidly with the A drive making noise to the same tempo.

I went inside it and had a look around and see nothing wrong. What I find strange is that if I power it down and back up each time it will act differently. Either it will come up fans blowing at max with a solid LED, or only the power supply fan with a solid led, both fans blinking and A drive clicking, or nothing.
There is no power to any peripheral device at all. I cannot open the cd drives, the network card doesn't power...nothing.

The computer I have hooked up to the same surge protector is fine.

I haven't noticed any problem with the computer up to now, no funny behavior or anything......this is hitting at a bad time. Guess I know what I will be getting myself for xmas.....

    DAMN!!!!

A Drive? Do you mean floppy drive?
Swap the good power supply to the bad computer if you can and see what happens.

Do you think a bad power supply would cause these problems?

I don't have another computer that is exactly the same, so its doubtful that the other power supply would be the right one. I am not savvy enough about the inside of these things to know...adding drives and RAM is about the extent of my expertise.

Power supplies are ALMOST universal.. if you have another one as long as it isnt ancient it should be good enough to atleast see if it works. If it puts out fewer watts than the one you have in there now just unplug some of the computer parts so it isnt using as many watts.

Yes, that did happen. I am using that laptop right now.

I (had) 4 computers running in the house. The one that crapped out is nearly 5 years old and has been relatively trouble free the entire time. Can't complain too much about that.

I am thinking that the power supply went bad. Very hopefullthat the hard drives are still intact and working. Other than that I have enough platforms here to pick up the devices I lost access to.

Give me the specifics of your computer and I might have a power source for you.

                Celeron d(?) 1.99ghz

Beyond that I would have to do some research.

I can get you the info off the power source if you like......

Sounds like either the power supply, or the part of the motherboard that manages power distribution, but I don't see how you could have damaged that. (I managed to damage whatever circuits controlled power on a PC once, and it would cause all sorts of odd behavior).

If its a standard power supply, you can replace it cheaply (and easily). My brother just picked up a 500w power supply (way more than you need) for free after rebate, so there are good deals out there if you look around.

How many drives do run and which cards? If if relatively low, I've got a PSU I'll ship to ya for next to nothing. Otherwise, you can always find a good deal on www.newegg.com
