    Amd?

I have pretty much always used Intel products. Looking around I have found that for the price AMD seems to offer much more. I also note that AMD has made their newer dual core processors "back" compatable, so with the right MoBo you can upgrade to a very modern processor, while starting off with an older and cheaper one.

I am looking into just getting a new MoBo/PCU combo with some ram and replacing the blown one in my old computer. The power supply is compatible and even the screw holes appear to line up to what I have. I am a beginner at this, but luckly a good friend of mine is a professional computer geek....and there are many knowledgable people here as well(apparently).

I have found everything on newegg, a place I have had very good results with in the past.

I've always favored AMD over Intel. Just until recently with Intel's core 2 duo, they were pretty much owned on every tier of processors by AMD.

Yeah I have always been an AMD user until recently. I now use the E6300 Core 2 Duo Processors from Intel, They are much cheaper than AMD, they are easily overclockable, and still run great if you dont overclock them. Right now they are the best bang for the buck.

The Athlon 64X2 seems to offer a lot for the money. Dual core at a considerable lighter price, AND it retros into many older AMD MoBo's.

I am currently pricing a AM2 socketed MoBo that Newegg has on sale and a 2ghz Athlon 64 processor for now and upgrade later to the dual core. The only thing that is really putting me off is the cost of sufficent RAM for this thing. I am debating whether the extra $100 for a pre-built system will be worth the new power supply, HD, and optical device(s).

My latest machine (an entire 7 days old) has a couple 2.66GHz Xeons (woodcrest) in it. this round goes to Intel. The Core 2 microarchitecture is crazy fast. For a long time AMD was by far the price/performance leader. Intel really is doing much better at this point in time.

by screw holes, you mean the ones that hold the system board onto the tray? practically all cases and boards are ATX. there is a noticeable difference between ATX and BTX, and even mATX. i would actually reccomend the dual core intels. although i am a big AMD fan also, i usually have many programs runnign at once so games can sometimes get laggy. up to you though.

Thanks for the many replies. I appreciate any info I can get. I will certasinly look into the dual core Intels, but doubt that I will be able to afford one right now.

I have been playing around with some old equipment that I have laying around to create a computer to use for the meantime. Its been fun actually. I snagged a computer from a guy at work today that he was going to throw out. Its a 500mhz celeron, and I had a 466 that had been baked when a fan went out. I swapped processors, the fan, some ram, etc....I am actually using it at the moment.

I am thinking of looking up the bios and using this computer to learn how to clear and load it. Nothing will be lost if I screw up.

I have also been playing with dual boot, but can't get the drivers in one OS right, it keeps looping.

I have wondered if its possible to link the two MoBo's to make them work together, some real frankenstein stuff

which OS'es are you dual booting?

if you find a way to lan/link two computers and have them both working on the same program, let me know. i've got 5 old computers i'm messing around with and trying to learn how to etch and i got to thinking that if i could link them i could have an interesting server for my friends and i to play on. i kind of remember a school having a server built out of a bunch/many 486's that was really good. can't find any info about it again though.

good luck with your experiments and learning the inner workings of computers.
