Here's a nice back for a good price it made by hyosung a motorcycle company from korea from what I've read they've been making bikes for the past 3-4 decades or so and have been producing parts for a lot of the japanese companies. Looks like a pretty good deal and have got good reviews from cycle magazines. I've been looking at their sports crusier but don't have the money right now.

Hyosong has been getting killed for quality issues on the sportbike site I go to, so I intend on steering clear.

Spartan, from what I understand, the speed of the bike is its downfall in more than one way. Aside from it being more powerful than other starter bikes, and hence more twitchy on the throttle, you're more apt to learn to rely on the straight line speed of the bike versus learning to corner it properly. Katanas are notoriously heavy from what I've read, and apparently the supersport riding position isn't the best to learn on. As such, it's looking like a Ninja (EX) 500(r) or a GS500F.

Seriously give a look at 400-650 sized Dual Sport bikes (resonably priced used and new). They are easy to learn on, and forgiving to new riders. They are also quite fun with street tires, and a decent dual sport tire will work well on gravel, fire roads and light trails for some backwoods exploring. They offer a more upright seating postition which is comfortable for longer riding trips, and a better view of the road. Number 1 thing to remember about riding motorcycles, use the front brake 50%-75% MORE than the rear. Sounds weird, but true. Number 2 thing, watch the other cars/trucks ALOT. They are your enemy on the road, they dont know it, but they are........................

the suzuki sv 650s is the common recommendation for a starting sportsbike; from the sound of it, its powerful but not too touchy or hard to learn on, and is more forgiving than other sportbikes.

Sorryu old post, I missed this, hahah.

Actually the Katana does not sit like a supersport, it's sits in more of a upright seated position because the katan is technically suzuki's Cheaper Euro Touring bike. The seating was WAYYY more upright and comfy then my 02 R1
