Yeah its really ridiculous how much a good quality diamond is. I paid about 2k for my wifes engagement ring and it just barely made a Carat, But you can tell a big difference when you compare lower priced and lower quality next to the ones like at Tiffany's just like you said.
I'm looking to get my wife a Right hand ring for combination First Child and 2nd Anniversary She loves stars, I bought her a Necklace last year with a star on it and im thinking about getting her this:

If she is just a girl friend, and the prospects of marriage ar low, then why not get her Cubic Zirconia? Looks like real diamonds, and if you dont tell her, she wont know the difference
HOWEVER, if she is a prospect, or turns out to be, you wife...........NEVER TELL HER.WOW, sigs. Havent seen these in a while here on AO.Comment

I saw a 1 caret for 36k. It looked nice... but i thought the rule of thumb was 10k per caret of a good diamond. I guess not.Originally posted by ShooterJM3.5 caret good quality single stone tiffany's diamond....40k?

This baby was a whopper. It made me want to cry. My horse ranch doesn't cost that much.
PS. I got the pulse and the rf mod done today instead. Thats something she doesnt need to know.

1 carat 36k ...that's one jacked up price..no matter what the quality of the diamond. Then again aren't like pink diamonds more expensive and the different colors and stuff..?All i know is my mom has bigger diamonds then 1 caret in platnum that didn't even cost 30k and they are quality diamonds..she has a friend that is a jewler that checks the stuff before she buys it.
Anyway..i personally find them to be a waste of money.
Oh ye the cubic zerconiom(sp?) stuff...even some of the best jewlers can't tell the difference between those and real diamonds.Comment

I have bought me girl friend jewelry for the past few holidays. I go to Zales most the time. I got her a ruby neckless for around 200 and earings for about 150 (doesn't even where them
) so this year I went to the store and found a pearl braclett for hella cheap. So if shiny don't work, the ladies like pearls too

I have been with my girl friend for 6 years this December and have bought her jewelry many times during this period. I have found that it does make a huge difference where you shop. I have also learned a little about jewelry and have found a few interesting things. one of the main suggestions i can make is to look for different settings. I just got her a necklace that is in white gold with an 1/8 carat diamond. when we were looking at it we thought it was totally out of our price range because the diamond looked so big. after finding out the actual size of the diamond i was impressed because it looked easily like a 1/4 carat in that setting. now i can say diamond by themselves are very hard and expensive. but in the right setting a smaller diamond can be very impressive. Good luck in the future.Comment

Like all things the more you understand, the more the pricing is made clear.
There are a nuimber of factors that determine the pricing of a Diamond. Weight, or carat is only one. The Color: if white: how pure the white is, if colored, the specific color, if natural and how pure. The Cut: which style, how accurate. And Clarity: how many impurities are visible under different levels of magnification. You can also take into account the source. Most folks want a natural (not lab created) and non-conflict diamond.
Given the same weight (carat), a stone will vary greatly as the other metrics of it's quality change. High end jewlers will only carry colorless (for white), ideal cut internally flawless or flawless stones. Those stones are very rare and very expensive. If you back off on all of those metrics (except weight/size) a bit, the stone will not look much different to the naked eye, but will be hugly cheaper.

Yep! After looking at a few diamonds and being educated about them, diamonds can vary by a lot! The cut and brilliance of a diamond matters, not just the size. Do a search for "Hearts and Arrows" diamonds if you're interested in buying the best:
I ended up buying 0.5 ct earings for her and it was expensive! A good diamond is never cheap! My suggestion is, if you're going to drop so much for your loved one, make sure you know you're getting your money's worth. Sure, it might be expensive...but the joy you see when your significant other gets is priceless.
