^^ actually thats a good idea..buying conflict diamonds just contributes to the problems...that was actually a decent movie.

So I got an engagement ring for my (soon to be) fiance. I walked in over a month ago and got it all picked out and all. Nice white gold band with .25tcw in diamonds and a few pink things (sapphires???) in there as well. Then I chose a 1ct pricess cut on it and told them, "No rush on making it... I'll be needing it for mid Janurary." They said they'd have it mounted by December 15th and when I find out the size it'll just take a few hours to adjust the band.
When she asked about layaway/credit/etc I just said, "Do you take debit?" She looked at me weird like nobody had ever paid for something up front
But they did end up accepting debit and I got all squared away. At this point, I'm thinking, "Sweet! All set!
" So i book a 4 night stay in a condo at ski resort in Vermont. The the plan obviously to pop the question while on Vacation.
So I get a call from the Lady at the store yesterday... Here's the basic conversation
Store: Yeah your stuff is done, you can pick it up anytime.
Me: Cool! Hey, I found out her size... it's a size 5. Can you get that done before I pick it up?
Store: Lemme see, hold on.... Sorry, the band you have has stones in the side... it can't be sized down without hurting some of the settings.
Me:
So what then?
Store: We'll have to custom make a whole ring just for that size. (enthusiastic voice) We can have it around Feburary 20th too!
Me: /jaw //Floor
R U SRS?!?! OMFGWTFBBQ!!! That won't work... I need it by Janurary 10th.
Store: Well see there quite a number of holiday purchases and th-
Me: NoNoNo... I paid for it... I was told I would have it by Dec 15th... I was told sizing was a few hours maximum... I booked a [goshdarn] nonrefundable Vacation... AND I NEED IT BY JANURARY 10th.
Store: I'll see if we can't get that out sooner...
She said she'd call me today... I still haven't heard from her.
God help them if they try to charge a penny more

In response to that... The original stone I picked out for the afformentioned ring was an ideal cut Peirless in a .76ct Princess Cut.Originally posted by gibbyYep! After looking at a few diamonds and being educated about them, diamonds can vary by a lot! The cut and brilliance of a diamond matters, not just the size. Do a search for "Hearts and Arrows" diamonds if you're interested in buying the best:
I ended up buying 0.5 ct earings for her and it was expensive! A good diamond is never cheap! My suggestion is, if you're going to drop so much for your loved one, make sure you know you're getting your money's worth. Sure, it might be expensive...but the joy you see when your significant other gets is priceless.
It was .76ct - "E" colorless - PERFECT cut - VVS1 Quality <---Pretty much perfect.
But then I actually took a storewide poll to see if I should buy the "normal" 1ct Diamond for $1000 less then the ideal diamond.
(yes, the saleslady suggested that my g/f would like a bigger diamond even though it cut her sale by $1000 - very helpful lady)
When placed in the setting, a quality normal diamond will look just as nice as the "perfect" diamonds.Comment

Synthetics are nice too... basically same as a CZ but have closer characteristics to diamonds.
This year I spent enough on diamonds equal to 8~12 Emags. Yeah, I think I have a problem

yeah... I could got myself 6+ nice xmags. But I shopped around and ended up going with Jarads.
Also people... BE SURE IT IS LASER INSCRIBED AND CERTIFIED.Comment

Psh, I'm waiting for lab diamonds to come out as more popular. I mean, ****, it's still a chunk of compressed carbon, just cut nicely. No other way around it, that's just what they are(plus some impuritys if you like pretty colors)
I'll be damned if I buy a diamond just because it's natural...Comment

Certfied yes, laser inscribed - meh, lots, if not most, of larger stones aren't laser inscribed.
Course if you fall into the "investment grade diamond" trap you're pretty much already screwed.
